Pokhara is a place full of natural beauty. The serenity of Phew Lake and the majesty of Machhapuchchre (6977 m) Machapuchchre peak standing behind it create an atmosphere of peace and magic. At a lower altitude than Kathmandu, it has a very tropical feel to it, a fact well complimented by the beautiful variety of flowers that thrive in their environment. In fact, the valley around Pokhara is home to the world famous views of dense forests, flowing rivers, emerald lakes, and of course, the Himalayas.

Phulchowki is located 18 km southeast of Kathmandu. At 2760m, it is the highest of the hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley and provides an ideal introduction to the birds of Nepal. Regularly recorded resident species include the tern, black eagle, mountain hawk-eagle, Callie’s pheasant, common hill partridge, ash woodpigeon, wedge-tailed green pigeon, mountain scopes owl, colored owlet, golden-throated barbet, speckled piculet and rufous- Bellied Pied Woodpecker, Grey-chinned Minivet, Striated Bulbul, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Spotted Forktail, Chestnut-headed and Grey-bellied Tessias, Chestnut-crowned and Black-faced Warblers, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Lacernut Scattered Babbler, Streak- Breasted Scimitar-babbler, Grey-throated and Spiny Babblers, White-crested, Striated, Rufous-chinned and Grey-sided Laughing Thrushes, Red-billed Leothrix, Cutia, White-browed Green and Black-eared Shrike-babblers, Hoary Barwing , Blue-winged Minla, Nepal Fulvetta, Yellow-browed Tit, Brown-throated Treecreper, Black-throated Sunbird, Maroon Oriole, Eurasian and Lancelated Jays, Red-billed Blue Magpie and Brown Bullfinch. A further 55 species are known as migrants or occasional visitors to the region. There are many plants and butterflies in the Phulchoki forest. Mammals include the leopard, yellow-necked marten, and orange-bellied squirrel. The next day we will go to Pokhara.

We will thoroughly explore the forest on the southern shore of the lake. Apart from the many birds found here, we are rewarded with some of the best views of Annapurna and Machhapuchhare that Pokhara has to offer. Species regularly found in this forest and on the shores of the lake include saffron, red-headed falconate, pallid and pied harriers, Eurasian griffon, red-headed and Eurasian black vulture, callie’s partridge, duck, gull, tern, wader, bulbul, black-backed forktail, Puff-throated Babbler, White-crested, Lesser Necklaced and Rufous-chinned Laughing Thrushes, Red-billed Leothrix, Minivets, Crimson Sunbird, Maroon Oriole, Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo, Red-billed and Green Magis-tailed Mountain Thrush, Chestnut-headed and Grey-bellied Tassias, Chestnut-crowned Warbler, Small and Rufous-bellied Niltvas and Snowy-brown Flycatcher, Long-tailed Broadbill, Pale Blue Flycatcher, White-tailed Robin, Spiny Babbler-browed Scimitar-Babbler, Striated Munia, Lesser Whitethroat and Thick-billed Warbler. Our experienced bird watchers will take you to areas where you are likely to see these birds. After marveling at the birdlife around Pokhara (Fewa Leak, Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake) we return to Kathmandu.
