Chilling – Markha -Dat – Tsomoriri Trek

Trekking route begin from Chilling bridge – Sku and end at Tsomoriri lake that lies in Changthang valley. But, you will from the day first you will enjoy the scenic beauty of the valley and wildlife. Wildlife and birds, can easily meet. Similarly, while doing this trek we come across with peaks like Kangyatse which is located in the village of Markha and the trekking route is just near to it. We can also enjoy the view of peaks belong to some other situated near this ranges. And from the first pass (la) which is to be climb named Zalungkarpo, from there one can see the peaks located in Zanskar ranges, also enjoy the view of colourful mountain lies in that area.

When we reach reach Changthang valley the land scape and areas are drastically change to broad one unlike Marka valley where it is gorge. The living style of people is totally different from each other. The first one is mainly depends on agriculture and the people of Changthang is depend on animals for their livelihood. They rear animals like yaks, goat and sheep for food, clothes and dairy for selling and exchange with other things of their daily uses.

The pashmina produce by the goat of this area is very famous throughout in the country and get very handsome money. One unique features of this people is living in tent and migrate from place to place in search of grass for their animals. And finally our trek after visiting Tsokar as a very famous lake named Tsomoriri and salt water lake our journey will turn towards Leh and 12 days trekking will end.

Details Itinerary

Arrive at Leh Airport. Please look at your name placard when exiting the arrivals hall. Your trek leader will wait for you outside the arrival hall and take you to your hotel in Leh. Welcome drinks will be served and after you freshen up, your trek leader will brief you about your journey.

After breakfast proceed for sightseeing tour of Leh, which offers a number of sightseeing options for the visitors. A historic town that served as the royal capital of the Old Kingdom, it is dominated by the nine-storey palace built by King Singge Namgyal in the grand tradition of Tibetan architecture, which is said to have inspired the famous Potala in Lhasa built about half.

From Leh to Chelling bridge by private jeep 65km takes around two and half hours to get there. Now the road is open upto Sku but tourist carrying vehicles are not permitted to go beyond the bridge to avoid disturbance for wild life as this valley is recognised as the home of many wild life species. So you have to start your trekking from Chelling bridge.

To avoid the heat of the day, it is recommended to start the trek early. Sometimes cross the river in Marka Valley. The village, the largest in the Marka Valley, has more than 50 families. There are two camps in the village, one in front of the village and the other by the river.

After walking some time from camping site Markha, you reach at the temple belong to Hemis monestery name Yensa on rock hill. Similarly the next place to reach is Umlung, comprise of some families and the camp site is end of the village with beautiful grassland with running chill water of Kangyatse peak.

Early start from Hankar camp is good to get to the next camp. Because today you have to cross the stream two to three times come from Kangyatse peak and Zalungkarpo. Water increase in the stream with day going so need to cross as early as you can. Yakrupal, the base of Zalungkarpo la. It is camping site. It takes around 5 to 6 hours to reach at the camp easy walking.

Acclimatization day for Zalungkarpola (5,190m)

We need to start early today as we have to cross the Zalungkarpola and the route for today’s camp is bit far. Atleast it takes around 4 hours to get to the top of the la and above two hours to get down. Its bit hard to go upward but you forget all hardship when you get on the top of the la because the view from the top is awesome and you can see the camp from there. In ancient time there used to be the castle of a king surrounded by forest and get the name Kharnak literally mean castle of black colour with forest. The ruin castle, field and local wheat meals are there to witness the existence of inhabitants in the past even today.

Need to walk down for one and half hours reach goarge valley. You will see wild plant throughout your route reach Tilat nala, trail upward till Dat arrive. it’s a permanent settlement of nomads of Kharnak use to live during winter season. Camping site is on bank of stream.

After breakfast today we will drive up to Tso Kar lake. Tso Kar Lake, also known as White Lake, is a salt lake known for its depth and size. It is situated in the Rupshu plateau of southern Ladakh. Historically, the lake was an important source of salt. Changpa nomads would export the mineral to whole Ladakh and neighbouring countries, especially Tibet. The valley is dominated by two high mountains, Thukje and Gursan; the nomadic settlement of Thukje is located 3km to the north of Tso Kar lake. The marshlands surrounding the lake make it a wonderful spot for birds like Brahminy ducks, bar-headed geese and the great crested grebes. The main attraction though is the famed but endangered black-necked cranes. They migrate from Tibet to the lake for the summer season. Tso Kar lake also attracts wildlife lovers. The most spotted animal is Kiang, the largest of all the wild asses. The area is also home to marmots, ibexes, Tibetan gazelles, snow foxes and snow leopards. The view of Tso Kar is breathtaking, surrounded by mountains and canopied with clear blue skies.

Today after breakfast we will drive to Tso Moriri Lake. Tso Moriri Lake, the largest of the high altitude lakes in all of India, is set against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. It is located at an altitude of 4,530m, stretches 26 km long and 8 km wide. Where we will stay in a homestay, near by Tso Moriri Lake.

This large lake reflects blue sky in the day and heavens in the night. Surrounded by high mountains, green pastures and groves, its sight is divinity to be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Streams from the melting snow of the surrounding mountains and springs get collected in the lake maintaining its water level. The area around the lake is a part of the wetland reserve under Ramsar site and is known as Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve. Therefore, pitching tents or any constructions near its banks is prohibited by the law. Nevertheless, the wetland is a hotspot for bird watching and wildlife enthusiasts. Many throngs the place to witness exquisite and unique birds and wildlife of the trans-Himalayas found only in Ladakh. The lake is located near the line of actual control. You would need special permission called ‘Inner line permit’ from the state authority to visit the place.

Drive back to Leh via Mahe brigde visit Medicinal hot spring Chumathang famous among local for remedies for many diseases. And continue drive to Leh.

Today on a relaxing day explore the most Tibetan Buddhist monasteries near Leh. Visit the Shey and Thiksey Monasteries, they are culturally important sites and return to your hotel.
