Details Itinerary

After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted by a representative of AlpineTrav Treks & Expeditions who will drop you off at our hotel. Then check-in at the hotel, fresh up and relax. Kathmandu at night.

Today we are flying from Kathmandu to Lukla. The airstrip, built by Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpas in the mid-1960s, has a flight time of about 35 minutes. After landing we start the trek, where we follow the main trail from Chaurikharka to Phakding at 2713m. The walk is easy and after passing the small village of Ghat at 2550m, it is a short walk to Phakding where we will stay for the night.

From Phakding we cross high suspension bridges to reach Monjo Everest National Park This is the gateway to Everest National Park which was established to preserve and protect the fragile mountain environment. Then we hike steeply to Namche. If the weather is clear, one can see the first glimpse of Mount Everest. Namche is Khumbu's main trading village and has a busy to market - a meeting place for Hindu traders from the Terai and Tibetan yak caravans crossing the glacial Nangpa La. We spend the night in a beautiful hotel in Namche.

We stay at Namche for the second night to acclimatise to the altitude. Namche is a prosperous village, situated on a large protected moat. Its importance increased during the period when Tibetan salt was traded for grain from the lowlands of Nepal. After breakfast, there are several options: a visit to the National Park headquarters to see interesting displays of Sherpa lifestyle and culture. There are also mountain climbing demonstrations and descriptions of the park's flora and fauna.

Today it’s a steep climb out of Namche Bazaar up to Kyangjuma Village. At Kyangjuma, we can contemplate on terrific views of Thamserku, Kantega, and Ama Dablam. The tough part of today is sure going to be the ascent of the Mong La, a very appealing place hanging on the spur of Mt. Khumbila. A medieval historical Chorten stands at the centre of the settlement of Mong La. We spend some time at the top of Mong La to look with awe at the surrounding snow-capped mountains and valleys while enjoying lunch. The most eye catching feature of the trail today is the wealth of plant and animal vegetation including wildflowers and Rhododendrons that we see on the way. We may even spot wild lives like pheasants, mountain goats, and the subtle musk deer. Continuing our hike through forests, some waterfalls and bridges, we reach Dole, a small village with few teahouses.

Today it’s another short day starting with a climb out of the small Dole Valley before ascending more gradually up the Dudh Kosi valley, high above the river. The walking is easy, but we will still feel the effects of altitude on even the smallest hillock. The barren alpine scenery with only small clusters of scrub juniper is a stark contrast to the snowy white peaks and deep blue skies. After two hours, we will arrive at Luza (4360m), and after a further hour's walk we reach our lodge at Machhermo (4465m) where you will spend the evening.

After breakfast, we climb through a crest Chorten from where we enjoy master views of the valley below and Mt. Kangtega, Thamserku, and the northern part of Cho-Oyu at (8153m). Beyond the ridge the valley opens out as the trail passes through a Chorten and reaches Phangka at (4480m) after a brief soft hike. Phangka is an area where an avalanche in 1995 killed 40 people. We descend to the river bank before beginning to climb up to the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. It is a steep climb on the moraine. After crossing an iron bridge over a stream the trail levels out as it follows the valley past the first lake, known as Longpongo at 4690m, where we get chance to see the Lama footprints on a stone. As we see the sights of the second lake, Taboche Tsho, we watch in awe the glimmering turquoise blue mass of water dazzling in the sunshine. Just ahead of the second lake, we reach the third lake, the two connected by a heaving stream. Gokyo village is neatly placed by the third lake and Cho-Oyu Mountains stand tall in the backdrops, setting off stunning scenery, an ideal spot for our video cams to go on overdrive at this awesome area. (Gokyo)

The highlight of our trip today will be a morning hike to Gokyo Ri to witness the spectacular sunrise over Mount Everest and surrounding peaks. Then we will return to our hotel in Gokyo for breakfast. After lunch, those who want to make the most of it can hike up to the 'Fifth Lake' for a 'Scoundrels View' of Everest. We spend the second night at our Gokyo Lodge after exploring further afield.

After breakfast today we will depart for the next leg of our journey. Descending to the 'second' lake, we climb a ridge of moraine overlooking the Ngozumpa Glacier. The route across the glacier is well marked by cairns and takes about 40 minutes. We climb the glacier to a place known as Thangnak (4700m) and check in at one of the teahouses available around.

We will make it an early start for the tall day across the Cho La (5420m). Approaching the pass, we cross a large boulder field. Beyond this very old moraine, the climb to the pass is steep in places, involving some easy scrambling. The upper part of the route can be snow-covered, particularly after November. From the pass, there are excellent views including a completely different facet of Ama Dablam, now seen from the North West. The descent from the pass involves the crossing of a small glacier (often snow-covered) which is fairly straightforward. We descend to the grazing pastures below, the trail becoming more and clearer as we approach Dzongla (4830m) for a well-earned rest.

After breakfast this morning, crossing by some of the teahouses of Dzongla, we plod higher onto the pretty risky moraine of the Khumbu glacier, passing a chain of stone monuments built in memory of Sherpas who have died on mountaineering expeditions to Mt Everest. From hereabouts, the trail lowers and goes by the west side of the valley to Lobuche. You will see the sunset over Nuptse from this point which is an amazing sight to see.

A real early start is required to reach the Everest Base Camp. It takes several hours as the trail weaves its way through ice pinnacles and past the crevasses of the Khumbu Glacier. After a brief lunch and rest, we take the trail to Everest Base Camp through the once vast Gorak Shep Lake.Only upon reaching the Everest Base Camp do we really appreciate the Everest climbers who brave the risky route through the Khumbu icefall. Mountaineer's tents stand out in bright colors against the monotony of gray surroundings (especially in the spring). Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori are the mountains we can view from the base camp. On the return leg, we can take a higher route to get a grand view of the Khumbu icefall and the route to the South Col. We return to Gorakshep for a restful night.

Today is the most important part of our journey. We start early in the morning to take in the dramatic views from Kalapattar witnessing the first light of day shining on Mount Everest. However, we should prepare in advance for an early morning, dark and cold temperature (-10 to -14 degrees Celsius) departure. Also, there is always the possibility of cold winds which are very common. Although the familiar peaks like Lingtran, Khumbuste, Changtse Tower in the east appear between the summit of the West Shoulder and Nuptse. During the Kalapatthar climb we can catch our breath at many great views to click pictures. After a few hours of climbing, we reach Kalapathar. From here, we shake off to climb a rocky outcrop near the summit marked by cairns and prayer flags. When we reach the top, we sit on black rock cliffs and our eyes take in incredible Himalayan views, rolling from one mighty massif to another. We take as many pictures as possible with our cameras so they last a lifetime. After this we slowly descend back to Pheriche. For a good night's rest that we really deserve.

Today we descend to downhill, we return to the standard route to Namche Bazaar via Pangboche and Tengboche. Once again the views of the mountains are breathtaking. The panoramic views of the mountains from Kyanjuma are unreal, Ama Dablam in front of you. After another 1:30 hour walk from Kyanjuma, stay overnight at Namche market.

On the last day of our trek, we cross several suspension bridges over Bhote Koshi River to reach Lukla. We exit Sagarmatha National Park in Jorsalle and pass the villages of Monjo and Bengkar to arrive in Phakding. From Phakding, we pass several small villages, painted Mani walls, and prayer wheels to reach Lukla. Overnight at a lodge in Lukla.

We get up early in the morning, enjoy our breakfast & get ready for the arrival of our aircraft for the flight back to Kathmandu. On our touchdown at the Kathmandu airport, we will be met by our office reps and transferred to your hotel. Rest of your day is free to do your own things.
