Gokyo Chola Pass Trek is one of the most scenic and beautiful treks in the Everest Region. This trek links Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Valley with a high pass (Chola Pass crossing over 5417 m). It covers not only Everest Base Camp but also Lukla, Namche Bazar, Tengboche as well as Solukhumbu (District) and some nice peaks (like Gokyo Ri or Kala Patthar). EBC and Gokyo via Cho La Pass itinerary are one of Nepal’s most renowned treks as well as one of the most severe in the Himalaya mountains and Sherpa country. One of the goals of this expedition is the Everest Base Camp, an elevation of 5364 meters, and Kala Patthar, 5545m. When we climb Kala Patthar we can also see the southern face of Mt. Pumo Ri.
Gokyo Chola Pass Trek starts with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and you will start your trek from Sherpa village Lukla. You can add other few hiking options for additional side trips in the Khumbu high valley of Nepal.  Your adventure package includes the crossing over Cho la pass EBC (5,416m) which is the highest pass in the Khumbu region. To cross Cho la pass you have to be mentally prepared because it needs 6 hours of energetic walk and good physical fitness for adapting to this high altitude. Gokyo Chola pass gives you the chance to explore the Khumbu valley and around Gokyo lake. Gokyo Chola pass trekking trail extends up to Kalapathar and walks downhill from Lukla to Tengboche, Namche, and Parking. During the trek, we spend several days moving through the homelands of the Sherpa people, and we see Buddhist monasteries and close-up views of Mt. Everest and neighboring Ama Dablam (6856m), considered by many to be among the most beautiful mountains in Nepal.

Day 05: Trek Namche Bazaar to Dole (4,110m) walk – Duration: 6 hrs.
Day 06: Dole to Machhermo (4,470m) walk – Duration: 4 hrs.
Day 07: Machhermo to Gokyo (4,800m) walk – Duration: 4 hrs.
Day 08: Explore Gokyo valley and Acclimatization
Day 09: Trek to Thangna/Dragnag (4,700m) walk – Duration: 4.5 hrs.
Day 10: Trek to Dzongla (4,830m) walk – Duration: 6 hrs. Over the Cho La Pass ( 5,368m)
Day 11: Trek to Lobuche (4,910m) walk – Duration: 4.5 hrs.
Day 12: Trek to Gorak Sheep (5,110m) walk – Duration: 3.5 hrs. and visit Everest base camp (5,364 m)
Day 13: Hike to Kala Patter (5,54 m) and trek to Pangboche walk – Duration: 7 hrs.
Day 14: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) walk – Duration: 5.5 hrs.

Best time for Gokyo Chola pass Trekking:

The best time for the Gokyo Chola pass trek is in Autumn (September, October, and November) and Spring (March, April, and May) are the best times for the Chola Pass Trekking. During these times, the weather and climatic conditions in the Everest region remain stable for a long time. This creates a perfect trekking environment.

About Nepal Visa:

All foreign nationals except Indian Nationals are required to arrange a visa in order to enter Nepal. A Nepalese Visa can be obtained either prior to your arrival at a Nepalese embassy abroad or on arrival time in Kathmandu at the airport. But nationals from Afghanistan, Iraq, Cameroon, Ghana, Somalia, Swaziland, Palestine, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Liberia cannot secure the Nepalese Visa upon arrival. The Visa can be also taken at entry points at Nepalese borders. For Nepalese Visa, it requires your passport with at least six months validity, a recent digital photo (size: 1.5″ x 1.5″), and the following fees either in USD dollars cash or the equivalent local currency.

Travel Insurance:

We strongly advise you to take travel insurance before joining a tour which should cover medical expenses, hospitalization, helicopter evacuation from high-altitude places in case of an accident or medical emergency. Coverage Your insurance should have up to the elevation of 5100 meters. It would be advantageous for you also to choose an insurance policy that also covers lost or stolen baggage. We would request you to bring your insurance documents when you come to Nepal.


Accommodation:

In Gokyo Cho-La Pass Trekking there are lodges along the trail. Lodges typically offer a room with a wooden bed with a simple mattress or foam pad, a cotton pillow, and a blanket or quilt. All have electric lights with a spacious dining room lounge. We will accommodate you and your group in the local lodge available each day. We send a porter ahead of us to book the required rooms for you (here rooms cannot be booked in advance).
In the case of Kathmandu, we offer you a tourist standard hotel under 3-star categories unless it is mentioned otherwise or clients have a special choice. You will get different options for accommodations ranging from basic to standard. Different other facilities such as hot showers, Wi-Fi, charging facilities, you may find the western toilet or the Asian ‘squat’ type toilets. etc.

Food & Drinks:

In Gokyo Cho-La Pass Trekking it’s commonly available for Authentic Nepali meals: Dal Bhat (rice with lentil soup and seasonal vegetables) eggs, French fries, porridge, Granola, Cornflakes, and muesli.
Besides the national dish, one can find various options such as noodles, spaghetti, dumplings, soups, salad, pizza, pasta, fries, and many more. Along with that, roti’s and varieties of curries are available for lunch. Overall, most Nepalese cuisines are potato dishes, noodle dishes, soup dishes, rice dishes, bread dishes, Dhal Bhat meals, and egg/porridge dishes.
Tea and hot lemon are traditionally the main drinks on the trail though coffee is found everywhere. Bottled soft drinks, bottled water, and even beer are common along the route but the price of each bottle rises each day when you move upward.


Climate & Weather of Nepal:

Climatic conditions of Nepal vary from one place to another in accordance with geographical features. In the northern summers are cool and winters severe, while in the south, summers are tropical and winters are mild. Nepal has nameTravelingly five major seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn, and winter.
Travelling in and through Nepal is not subject to seasonal constraints. Even in December and January, when winter is at its worst, bright sun and beautiful views compensate for the cold. Like most trekking fields in Nepal, spring and autumn are the best time to visit. Trekking Equipment:

The camping equipment such as sleeping tents, dining tents, kitchen equipment, and needed communication sets, first aid, and Altitude Chamber bags will be managed by us. In addition to that, it is suggested that you bring the following personal gear on the trip: Trekking in lower altitudes might require lightweight trekking trousers and T-shirts. On higher altitude treks, warm clothing is necessary as the mountain weather can be unpredictable and harsh. Consult with any of the outdoor stores in your hometown or in Kathmandu who will easily help you in getting the right gear for you.


Sleeping bag and liner: Down-filled, 4-5 season sleeping bags are good for most of our trips. You can use a cotton, silk, or fleece inner liner to save washing your sleeping bag and to better keep warmth in harsh climates.
Duffel / Kitbag: Strong fabric but with a simple design and no wheels will be best. This will protect your gear as it is carried by the porters or yaks on rough routes and forests.
Trekking Boots: A pair of comfortable and strong boots are necessary for all trips. Your boots should have good ankle support, enough toe room for descents, a stiff sole to lessen twisting torsion, and it should be lightweight. The leather inner lining is good, Umbrella is better. Make sure to get good boots on longer and tough treks. You can also buy boots in Nepal.
Day bags: Your day bag should be comfortable with a good strong waistband. It should be big enough to keep a jacket, fleece, water bottle, camera accessories, and snacks.
Down jacket/vest: This is essential for all the high-altitude treks.
Fleece vest or jacket: These will be useful for you during the normal day hours. For colder temperatures during the evenings and mornings, a thermal top or a light-down jacket is needed in addition.
Shoes/Sandals for camp wear Teva Sandals or flip flops and a pair of running shoes for campsites and town.
Socks: In lower altitude treks, you need 3 to 4 pairs of good quality cotton mix sports socks. For higher altitude treks you will need 3 to 4 pairs of thick and warm trekking socks.
Wind/rain jacket: Waterproof and breathable. Gore-Tex (or similar) jackets are recommended for most of the high altitude treks and climbing, lighter jackets for warmer areas.
Thermal shirts: Good lightweight thermals will keep you warm and comfortable during the trek.
Nightwear thermals: Silk-weight or midweight nightwear thermals are good to wear inside your sleeping bag.
Fleece/sweatpants: Useful for chilly evenings or colder areas
T-shirts: Cotton T-shirt or mixed yarn travel shirt is advisable. We suggest T-shirts with a collar to cover the back of your neck and protect it from the sun, and sleeves that can be rolled up or down.
Trekking pants: 2 pairs of light material and loose pants recommended.
Wind pants: A pair of wind pants, not necessarily Gore-Tex but similar. We recommend that you bring waterproof wind pants if your trekking pants are not waterproof.
Underwear: 4 -6 pairs.
Warm hat: A warm hat is essential for cold trekking days. It is also nice for colder temperatures during the evenings.
Neck gaiter: For trekking in harsh climates to keep you warm.
Trekking poles: Useful on all trekking especially steep, rough terrain. They’re also useful in chasing dogs and animals on the way.
Sunglasses: Sunglasses are strongly recommended for bright days and snow.
Gloves: A pair of wind-proof gloves.
Water bottle: Recommended one liter or more in capacity. The bottle should be able to hold boiling water and should be leak-proof. You also need a Camelbak or hydration system in addition.
Pee container: Very useful on cold nights!
Flashlight/torch: Petzl or similar torches with LED bulbs. These are essential for night trips to the toilet or as a light in your tent.
Towel: A small one for trekking, or a camp towel.
Sunscreen and lip balms/ Moisturizer: Enough sunscreen and lip balm with SPF 30+. Moisturizer is essential to protect your skin from dry air and harsh sunshine.
Sun hat: We recommend a wide-brim sun hat.
First aid material: Bring the personal medicines that you need. We carry a first aid box containing paracetamol, aspirin, antibiotics, decongestants, antiseptic, antihistamine cream, bandages, band-aids, blister tape, diam ax, etc.
Water treatment: A bottle of iodine tablets is advisable to purify your drinking water, rather than buying mineral waters although these are also readily available.
Money-bags: A money bag with pockets that you can wear on the waist or neck is convenient.
Thermarest/Inflatable pad: It is not necessary to bring your own Thermarest as we provide comfortable mattresses on the trek. However, if you have your own Thermarest that you prefer, it is OK to bring it along.
Down boots: Useful for cold evenings.
Snow gaiters: These are sometimes useful but are not generally necessary in trekking.

Trekking grades in Nepal

Trekking in Nepal can be done by all levels of trekkers; if they think themselves fit and have a strong desire. In general, trekking in Nepal can be graded into five levels according to route features and elevation. Some trekking routes are combined with a higher level of elevation which requires some different standards of physical fitness and acclimatization or rest days. We advise you to choose a trek that is fit for your capabilities and present health condition. Morning and evening walks, jogging, stretching, meditation, and regular light exercise will help you for the trek.


GRADE A: EASY
Trekking can be ideal for any age group and it is up to 3000 m of elevation and the duration will be about not more than 10 days. It is the easiest treks, tours, and walking in a day that does not exceed more than 5 hours, but it depends upon your walking speed. These types of trek also allow plenty of opportunities to view the Himalayas and encounter local culture.


GRADE B: MODERATE
Trekking duration is about two weeks long covering elevation from 3000m to 4500m. This level of trek requires sound physical fitness conditions and about 6-7 hours of daily hiking capabilities. This type of trek involves a mixture of some longer and shorter hikes and trails can be rough, steep, and have many ups and downs with some exposure.


GRADE C: STRENUOUS
Trekking involves up to 5000m or a few meters up level of trails with side trips to higher elevations. Considered to be harder, therefore, preparation for fitness and good health conditions is essential. As it is above 5000m and demands good health conditions and physical fitness, we do not recommend it for those who suffer from asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, or complicated medical conditions.


GRADE D: DIFFICULT
Trekking is very strenuous trekking as it requires mountaineering skills and knowledge. The elevations range from 5000m to 6000m and approximately 7 to 10 hours of walking a day for trekking in Nepal. It covers very remote areas, traveling over snow-covered passes at an altitude of up to 6000 meters. You may need to use axes and crampons to cross the pass when there is heavy snow.


GRADE E: CHALLENGING
The challenging trekking grade is limited to those with an excellent level of personal experience and fitness of an outstanding sense of humor and high tolerance levels. It is a challenging trek, which is mountaineering level and above the height of 6000m. This type of trek needs 16- 28 days more for going trekking on the higher altitudes. During the trek, you may have to cross the snow-covered passes in very remote areas. You need to learn some mountaineering skills before going on this trek.
