Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Ri Trek is quite simply the classic trek in Nepal. High in the priority list of trekkers, the Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Ri is one of the most visited regions in the Himalaya. Trekkers usually fly from Kathmandu to Lukla to save time before the trek begins to Everest Base Camp. Situated at 2,815m, it is a popular place for visitors to the Himalayas near Mount Everest. From Lukla, the trek begins upward passing Phakting, Manju and Jorsalla and reach to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m , following the valley of the Dudh Koshi River. Then, trek allows a day of rest for acclimatization.
Namche Bazaar is located within the Khumbu area at 3,440 metres, at its low point. The trail follows the valley of Imja Khola with spectacular views of Thamserku, Kangtega and Ama Dablam mountains, and dominating the skyline ahead are the giants, Lhotse and Everest. It is an exhilarating, but challenging trek that combines the Everest Base Camp route with the turquoise glacial lakes of Gokyo valley. We start with a classic, less visited route to Everest Base Camp on the Khumbu glacier. Kala Pathar (5,545 m) is our first ascent which rewards us with a panorama of the majestic Everest and its neighbouring peaks of Ama Dablam, Makalu, Nuptse, and Lhotse. Throughout this Trek, the panorama is constantly changing but each and every one leaves you with an indelible memory of this mountain wilderness.
The Trailthen crosses the glaciated Cho La Pass (5,330 m) to the Goyko valley with its perfect turquoise glacial lakes. One of the eight-thousanders, Cho Oyu (8,153m) is seen towards the north from Gokyo. There are many great views around the valley. The most popular of them is seen by ascending a ridge for 2-3 hours to the north-west to reach a small summit. You can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view extending from Cho Oyu and Everest, to Lhotse all the way to Makalu. Alpine Trav Treks and Expeditions is always ready to manage your treks as per your interests and requirements.

Transfer to airport to connect 30-minutes flight to Lukla. The trek begins gently up by the riverside, along with excellently paved footpaths, passing a multitude of teahouses and scattered green conifers. Phakding at 2,610meters is a pretty village comprising approximately 30 houses. It is roughly a 3-hour walk from Lukla and is located at both sides of Dudh koshi River.
The day will begin with the gentle walk to Monjo, another beautiful Sherpa settlement of the trek; official entry into the Sagarmatha National Park where you will have to show your permits (SNP entry permit and TIMS card)at the office in Monjo. The walk to Namche Bazaar involves a tough uphill climb of about 590m, taking approximately 5-hours, however, halfway up the hill, you will be able to see Everest and Lhotse for the first time. As you approach the town of Namche Bazaar, the peaks of Thamserku (6, 648) and Kwangde (6,224m) are visible to the East and to the West, the sacred mountain khumbila (5,707m).
As the gateway to the Khumbu region, Namche Bazaar, at an altitude of 3440m, is famous for its many bakeries and local market (haat bazaar) which takes place each Saturday. Built on a steep mountain bowl with excellent views of high Himalaya on either side, the town has restaurants, shops, banks, and currency exchange. Remarkably, for such a remote location, there is also the availability of cyber cafes and pool halls.
It is important to walk to higher altitudes while you stay two Day in Namche Bazaar. There are options here to trek to Khumjung where you can visit the local school and hospital or to Thame village of Sherpa Everest expediters and of the great Everest Sherpa Tenzing Norgay or to airstrip at Shyanboche (3720m), above the airstrip is the Everest view hotel, which was set up by the Japanese to bring affluent tourists into the region for a prime view of Everest. The scheme was brought down by the fact the hotel was at nearly 4000m, and many suffer from altitude sickness.
The day begins with a slight climb up about 10-minutes and descends back to the Dudh Koshi at 3550m before ascending to Tyangboche at 3870meters. The views of Everest, Thamserku, Amadablam and the valley are mind-blowing. At an altitude of 3870meters; Tyangboche is a charming spot built around the main Tibetan monastery in the region where you can enter and listen to the monks chanting their mantras. The view of Lhotse, Everest, and Amadablam are unforgettable.
Your journey will pass through wooded forests and along the Imja Khola valley. The views will become more impressive as the high Himalaya begin to surround you. You will contour gradually to Pangboche, an interesting gompa site above the main village, this is the oldest monastery in the region and apparently dates from the introduction of Buddhism to Khumbu. You will then climb up to Dingboche at 4360m. The views of Amadablam and Island Peak are breathtaking.
Today, we will have another day of acclimatization. You will head to another beautiful part of the Khumbu region, Chhukung offers you a magnificent view of the Mt. Makalu, Island Peak, Peak 38 etc.
The valley now becomes barren of vegetation as you walk up towards Lobuche, but your attention will be firmly on the snow-capped peaks, which soar above you. The path joins the trail below Thugla and gives beautiful views of Cholatse (6442m), across the valley. The path can become quite rocky in places and it is important to watch your step. After another steep ascent, Tawache and Nuptse are particularly spectacular form Lobuche, towering almost 2 kilometers directly overhead.
Today, the walk towards Everest is along the Khumbu Glacier. You will reach the small village of Gorakhshep, where you will be able to have lunch. After having your lunch the trail will lead you to the Mt. Everest base camp at an altitude of 5400m. Everest base camp gives you an unforgettable view of Khubutse, Mt. Pumori, Changtse and Khumbu ice fall instead of Mt. Everest.
The ascent to Kalapatthar or ‘Black Rock’ will offer the best views of Everest. At the top, you will have a 360-degree view of some of the highest peaks in the world including Mt. Pumori (7,169m), Mt. Everest (8,848m), and Lhotse (8,516m), the Tibetan peak Changtse, Nuptse (7,861m), and countless other smaller peaks. You will then descend and return to Lobuche same way and then continue to Dzong La and to Gokyo Valley crossing, Cho La Pass.
Today, we start with a gentle climb at first hours towards the Cho La Pass. The trail crosses the glacier which is marked by cairns. Once we reach Cho La Pass, the trail goes downward to Thangnak. We then continue our trek passing by the lakes at Gokyo which pours down to the western division of the Ngozumpa Glacier. We go diagonally through the three outstanding lakes and traverse the third lake, Dudh Pokhari, and on the East bank we can mark the community of Gokyo. Walking along the lake, you can view the splendid summits of Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang.
We take an early morning hike to Gokyo Ri where we observe the magnificent panorama of Mt. Everest (8848m), Nuptse (7861m), Makalu (8481m), Lhotse (8516m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Pumori (7161m), Ama Dablam (6856m), and the other Himalayas. We then descend through steep trails and trek along Dudh Koshi River on the moraines of Ngozumpa Glacier till we reach Machhermo. From Machhermo, we trek for a couple of hours to reach Dhole. Overnight in Dhole.
Trekking along rocky trails, we pass dense forests of rhododendron till we reach Phortse Thanga. We then trek to Mongla and then descend till Kyangjuma. Following the rocky trails, we pass some monasteries and walk on stone steps through Mani walls on our way to Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
On the last day of our trek, we cross several suspension bridges over Bhote Koshi River to reach Lukla. We exit Sagarmatha National Park in Jorsalle and pass the villages of Monjo and Bengkar to arrive in Phakding. From Phakding, we pass several small villages, painted Mani walls, and prayer wheels to reach Lukla. Overnight in Lukla.
Enjoying the last glimpse of the mountains we have recently visited, the 35 minutes scenic flight takes us back to Kathmandu. On back to kathmandu.
