Gosaikunda Lakes Trek – 8 Days, Overview

Located in Langtang National Park, north of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, the Gosaikunda Lake trek offers magnificent Himalayan views from west to east. Gosaikunda Lake Trek, we witness numerous snow-capped mountains, including the Langtang Lirung (7,234m), Yara Peak (6,236m), Ganesh Himal (7,422m), Gauri Shankar (7,134m), Shisha Pangma (8,027m), Kang Guru (6,981m), etc. Apart from the mountains, the trek offers jaw-dropping scenery and stunning views of glaciers. The lovely forests, green meadows, and fine mountain villages with several chortens, prayer wheels, and prayer flags decorate the trekking route. Similarly, at Gosaikunda Lake, you can spend time soaking in the soothing views of the surrounding mountains and hills.

Located at an altitude of 4,380 meters, Gosaikunda Lake is a sacred lake with significant religious significance for Hindus and Buddhists. It is a freshwater lake and was also declared a Ramsar site in 2007. Hindu mythology says that Gosaikunda Lake is the abode of Lord Shiva and Gauri. Not only that, it is said that the pond was formed because Lord Shiva threw a trident at the mountain to draw water for drinking. Yes then, if you choose this short trek, you will find it different than expected with its deserted forests path and Himalayan views and chirping of birds. There is no shortage.

The Gosaikunda Lake trek route passes through traditional Tamang villages and into the Langtang National Park. After a scenic 117 km drive from the capital Kathmandu, Dhunche, to Sano Bharku (1,860m), we begin our trek. The route ascends through the hilly terrain, passing through Chandan Bari (Sing Gumba), Cholang Pati and Laure Binayak villages, to Gosaikunda (4,380m). The view from Gosaikunda is amazing. Since Gosaikunda is a holy and peaceful place, this trek is also called a pilgrimage. It will take you about an hour to reach the altitude from Gosaikunda to Surya Peak (5,145m). From there, one can witness the most breathtaking views, where you can see the entire Himalayan range as well as the surrounding area in 360 degrees. Look around the sacred Gosaikunda Lake. After retracing the steps through Chandan Bari to Thulo Syabru, the path leads to Thulo Syabru. Then we our 132 km journey back to Kathmandu from Thulo Syabru.

Day 01 :

Arrival in Kathmandu Airport and transfer to hotel

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal. After completing visa formalities and collecting your luggage at the airport, please exit the arrival hall. Your tour leader will be waiting for you just outside the arrival hall and will take you to hotel in Kathmandu. Please look for a placard with your name on it at the exit of the arrival hall. Then depending on the time, you will have time to walk around the hotel and familiarize yourself near hotel.

Day 02 :

In Kathmandu, sightseeing and trek prepare

Today is a full-day Kathmandu tour; in which you will explore various UNESCO sites in Kathmandu. We will start our tour with a visit to Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal. We will witness the Hindu cremation ceremony at Aryaghat, located on the banks of the Bagmati River. And we will visit Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal. We can see the rich Tibetan culture at Boudhanath. Similarly, we will end the day’s tour by visiting Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal residence of Nepal.

Day 03 :

Drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche

Proceed through winding roads, where you will pass many waterfalls and see views of lush green terrain and lush forests. It takes about 6 to 7 hours to cover the distance of 119 km to reach Dhunche. Overnight at a Teahouse/Lodge.

Day 04 :

Trek from Dhunche to Sing Gompa

The Gosainkunda trek will take you uphill past a school and a gompa, which will take you through vibrant oak, cedar and hemlock forests to the Buddhist monastery - Sing Gompa, located at 3250 meters. If time permits, you will wander around Sing Gompa and visit a yak cheese factory, where local cheeses are produced. Stay here tonight.

Day 05 :

Trek from Sing Gompa to Gosaikunda Lake

After your breakfast, you will climb to Gosaikunda (4380m). Today’s trek will be comparatively more difficult than yesterday’s. The trek will gradually climb uphill from the beginning. On the way to Gosaikunda, you will trek through steep and narrow paths. While gradually climbing uphill, you will have to walk through barren hills and face cold winds. So, make sure to wear warm clothes to keep yourself warm in such cold environment.

After about one and a half hours of trekking, you will reach Cholangpati (3500m). From here, you will get a close and clear view of mountains like Langtang Lirung (7234m), Langtang Ri (7205m), Manaslu (8163m) and Ganesh Himal (7422m). From where another 2 hours of trekking will take you to Lauri Vinayak (3900m). From Lauri Binayak, one can enjoy panoramic views of Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Langtang Ri. Then, after a trek of about 2 hours, you will reach a temple called Shakyamuni, which has both Hindus and Buddhists values. After a half-hour trek, you will see the first lake, Saraswati Kunda, followed by Bhairav Kunda and the mighty Gosaikunda. Where you will also visit other nearby lakes and spend the night at a tea house.

Day 06 :

Trek from Gosaikunda to Thulo Syabru

In the morning you will visit some scenic spots. The most popular view point above the lake is "Surya Peak 5,145 meters", it takes about two hours to reach the top of this peak. It is best to visit early in the morning to watch the sunrise from the view. Then you will return to your lodge for breakfast. After breakfast today you will continue your trek through Chandambari (Singgumba) where you can have lunch, and later descend to Thulo Syabru where there are excellent views. You will get a chance to see some of the views that you missed yesterday. If you are lucky you may see red pandas, playful monkeys and bears. The forests road leading to Thulo Syabru will take you.

Day 07 :

Drive from Thulo Syabru to Kathmandu

After breakfast, you will return to Kathmandu via Dhunche, passing through local settlements and the high mountains on the banks of the Trishuli River. From there, it will take about 6 to 7 hours to reach Kathmandu by private car. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to the hotel. You will feel tired due to this long journey, so you can rest for the rest of the time.

Day 08 :

International departures, or join optional activities

After breakfast and on your last day in Kathmandu, we will be ready to take you to the international airport three hours before your scheduled flight. It is a great honor to meet you in the Nepal Himalayas, and we pray for your safe journey home. We will remember the wonderful times we spent together. Have a nice trip!!! ACCOMMODATION

We will stay in Kathmandu at Hotel Vajra or similar category, which is a standard tea house/lodge during the trek, and this is all included in the cost of the trip. However; during the trek, your accommodation will be in simple teahouses/lodges with basic and shared facilities.

Most teahouses/lodges in the Langtang region have squat toilets: most bathrooms are usually shared but we will arrange for you and your group to stay in local lodges on a daily basis. Please note that some of them are very basic and a sense of adventure is required.

In Kathmandu, your accommodation will be on a twin-shared basis and if you wish to have a single room, upon request you will need to pay a single supplement as mentioned in the trip cost. However, please note that there are less teahouses along the trekking route that do not allow single room accommodation. Paying a supplement guarantees a room in Kathmandu, but this may not always be possible in trekking areas. It’s generally impossible to arrange private rooms. This is the case even if you’re willing to pay extra since the teahouses owners will not give out a private room if it means someone else goes without a room.

MEALS ON THE TREK

During the trek, we will serve typical Nepali food, various ethnic dishes as well as all kinds of international dishes (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, and so on, Indian cuisine) from pizza and chips to apple pie. And breakfast includes bread, eggs, pancakes, muesli, granola, konflux, porridge as well as tea, coffee and hot milk with fresh fruits. Similarly, hot lunch will be served on the way to our next destination. Upon reaching the destination, meals and breakfast will be served at the teahouse/lodge where we will spend the night. However, in Kathmandu, we will only provide breakfast. Because you can taste the food you like, as there are high-quality delicious foods from different countries available. Therefore, you will have to arrange your own lunch and dinner during your stay in Kathmandu.

DRINKING WATER

We provide boiled water for drinking purposes in all our teahouses/lodges or camping treks. We strictly discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles such as mineral water on all our treks. Therefore, it is highly recommended to carry a hot water bottle. And you can ask your staff to fill the bottle with water.

How difficult is the Gosaikunda Lakes Trek?

Duration for treks of this grade stretches up to one (1) week. Trails generally go above 4000 meters and on a daily basis, you can expect to be walking for about 5 – 7 hours. involves occasional difficult days. Expect ups and downs as well for there will be hills to climb as well.

What is the best time to trek to Gosaikunda Lakes?

The best time to trek to Gosaikunda Lakes Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) months when the weather is favorable and suitable for climbing at high altitudes. These seasons offer crystal-clear mountain views with clear skies. The trek can also be done in February and early September but the trek is best done during the above months.

Do I need travel insurance for this trek?

We advise all our clients to get travel insurance that covers up emergency evacuation that may be needed in case of the occurrence of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) or any other reasons in high altitudes where there are no other means of transportation available.
