An overland trip to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar is one of the most fascinating destinations in the Tibetan landscape and the most beautiful wilderness of the Himalayan range. Mount Kailash, the holy land of Lord Shiva, is blessed with natural and cultural peace. This fascinating pilgrimage destination is famous for its unseen and unexplored landscapes, Himalayan scenery and religious settlements.
Mount Kailash (6,740m) is among the highest peaks in the region and lies entirely north of the Himalayan barrier within Tibet. Religious beliefs within Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, Jainism, and pre-Buddhist animism—Bonpo have their own myths to tell and each worships the sacred mountain. Besides Mount Kailash, there is a huge and beautiful lake Mansarovar on the Tibetan Plateau, a dip in which is believed to wash away all sins and attain salvation.
The Kailash and Mansarovar overland journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Kerung, the Nepal-China border. After clearing the immigration procedures we proceed towards Nyalam and spend the night there. The drive to Dongba follows and on the way, the scenic beauty of Lalungla Pass (16000 feet), the vast Paigu-tso Lake and the Brahmaputra River will take your breath away. If you are a devotee then Lord Shiva’s darshan and circumambulation of Mansarovar Lake is a lifetime experience.
After completing the circumambulation of Mansarovar Lake, the journey continues to Darchen. Darchen-Tarboche-Dirapuk is a tiring journey and trek through Dolmala Pass to descend to Gauri Kund and along the river to Juthulpuk (22km). The trek continues for about 8km and we go to Darchen and then to Mansarovar Lake. Return journey to Dongba, Nyalam, Zhangmu and finally back to Kathmandu by our private vehicle.
Along with Mount Kailash, Mansarovar Lake is another sacred pilgrimage site for devotees. This lake is made up of two Sanskrit words “manas” meaning mind or consciousness and “sarovar” meaning lake. With the belief of earning merit, people circumambulate this lake and take a dip in the cold water, believing that they will secure their place in heaven after death.
The 70m deep Mansarovar lake with eight lotus petals is spread at a height of (4580m) above sea level and has a circumference of 90km. It takes three days to circumambulate this vast lake. The holy Kailash Mansarovar mountain has a long history with spiritual and religious significance. Hindus believe it to be the bathing place of Lord Shiva and Parvati, Buddhists believe it is a place where Buddha attained enlightenment through meditation and Jains believe it is a place where their first saint attained salvation from this mortal life called Moksha. However, all religions consider this lake as the purest water body with eternal power. If you want to enroll yourself in an unforgettable sacred journey to this holy land, remember.
