There are two routes to reach Kailash Mansarovar from India. The first route is via Sikkim, where it passes through the Nathu La Pass. This route is suitable for the elderly who cannot trek as it is motorized. The other route is via the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand. This route requires some trekking and is suitable for those looking for an adventure. However, every traveler starts from Kerung near Kathmandu.
Yes! It is a very difficult and challenging trek, especially due to the altitude and thin air where there is 40% less oxygen than at sea level. In such a situation, there is a high risk of altitude sickness. During the trek, pilgrims have to pass through high-altitude areas under adverse conditions. The extremely steep slopes and the long distances to travel from one camp to another every day make the Kailash trek very difficult. If you have previous experience of trekking at high altitudes and exercise regularly and are in very good health, this will not be a problem.
Generally, for Indian citizens, the price can range from $2000 to $2800 while for non-Indian citizens, the price can range from $3000 to $3800. There are various factors that affect the price of Kailash Mansarovar trek, such as the route you travel, the number of people in the group, the season of travel, the mode of transport, the standard of hotels and food, and other aspects etc..
Kailash Mansarovar can be visited anytime from mid-April to the end of September every year. However, the best time to arrange a trip to Mount Kailash is undoubtedly from April to June and September which offer high visibility of the mountain as well as stunningly beautiful views and wonderful temperatures. July and August are the monsoon months which bring light rains and fog at times. November to March is the cold season where there is ice and heavy snowfall making some parts of the trek almost impossible to traverse.
Due to its high religious significance, Mount Kailash has always been and has not been climbed. The mountain is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Bon, and Jains. According to Hindu mythology, the mountain is considered the abode of Lord Shiva. Several attempts were made to reach the summit in the past, but none were successful due to extreme weather conditions at the time of setting foot on the mountain. In the mid-1980s, the Chinese government granted permission to Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner to climb Mount Kailash, but he declined the offer after protests from mountaineers around the world. The Chinese government then got the message and banned any future attempts to climb it. Not much is known, but it is believed that the only person to reach the summit was the Tibetan Buddhist yogi, Milarepa, in the 11th century.
Firstly, on the night of the full moon, Mount Kailash becomes heavenly. It is believed that taking a holy bath in Lake Mansarovar on the night of the full moon washes away all the sins of the present and the past 100 births and this extremely holy bath transforms a person into a new human soul with the same body. According to ancient Vedic astrology, the full moon radiates the most positive and vibrant cosmic energy. Therefore, people try to reach Kailash on the full moon to be a part of the pure spiritual energy that emanates from the natural surroundings of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a challenging yet rewarding pilgrimage. It requires careful preparation and planning. The spiritual journey to Kailash Mansarovar requires not only faith and devotion but also physical and mental preparation. Therefore, to help you prepare for this sacred adventure, here are some tips and advice that you can follow:
Exercise: This is the most essential part of preparing for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It improves the physical fitness and endurance required for the journey. Once you have booked the trip, you should start following a daily exercise routine that includes running, walking, cycling, swimming and other similar activities.
Acclimatization: When you will be traveling to high altitudes, it is essential to learn about acclimatization and its importance. This helps prevent altitude sickness and other health problems that may occur during the journey. You should drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and tobacco, eat light and nutritious food, and rest well during the acclimatization days.
Hydration: This is an important practice to avoid dehydration and altitude sickness. You should avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can lead to dehydration. Staying hydrated also helps improve blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the body, which is essential to cope with high altitudes and low oxygen levels.
Nutrition: Proper nutrition is important to maintain the necessary energy and health during the trek. You should avoid spicy, oily, and heavy foods, which can cause indigestion and discomfort, and eat light and nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, etc.
Gear and Equipment: Proper gear and equipment are essential to ensure a safe and comfortable trek. Gear and equipment must be durable to withstand the wear and tear of the rugged and challenging terrain of the Himalayas.
Altitude Sickness: The high altitude of the Kailash Mansarovar trek can lead to altitude sickness, which can affect your physical and mental well-being and hinder your spiritual experience. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness and take necessary precautions, such as acclimatization and hydration, to prevent it.
