Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve
A large number of migratory birds are found in the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Sanctuary located in the eastern terai of Itahari. Established in 1976 to protect the grasslands and islands in the flood plains of the Sapta Koshi River, it is also the last habitat of the Arna (wild water buffalo). Bird watchers flock here in search of beautiful Bengal floricans and brilliant white cranes. More than 440 species have been recorded here from November to February, including birds from Siberia and Tibet. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is also home to wild boar, jackals, pythons and crocodiles. The endangered Gangetic dolphins are seen occasionally when they surface in the river.
Getting there:
The easiest way to reach there is by air to Biratnagar and road from the airport to Koshi Tappu. Buses ply from Itahari to the reserve along Mahendra Highway.
