Ladakh Sky Trail Trek Overview
Ladakh Sky Trail Trek is a unique camping trek designed by us to explore a remote Himalayan region of northern India. While trekking for three weeks you will travel through Ladakh and Zanskar. Where, you will spend less time walking along jeep tracks with vehicle traffic. In fact, at the start of the trek (ie, Day 5), you’ll use can be road to your advantage by driving over Singge La (5,120m) to Yulching village. It is early days on the trek, and you are not yet sufficiently acclimatised to walk over a 5,000m pass. Your itinerary is very scenic and crosses more high passes in total compared.
On this remote trek, you’ll cross seven mountain passes over 4,500m. These passes link landscapes described as a geological wonderland. Stunning white-washed monasteries and Buddhist villages mark your route. you’ll hike on ancient footpaths from the Lamayuru monastery into the Zanskar valley.
Our Ladakh Sky Trail Trek is one of the best treks in Ladakh, exploring remote parts of the Indian Himalayas. This is a camping-style trekking expedition where you sleep in tents, and our cooks provide the meals. 23 Days Itinerary of Ladakh Sky Trail Trek
Arrive in Leh and check into the hotel. It is best to rest and stay hydrated for the rest of the day to help your body adjust to the high altitude. You will be given complete rest throughout the day to acclimatize yourself to the new environment at an altitude of 11,135 feet. In the evening, trek to Shanti Stupa (Vishwa Shanti Stupa). This trek offers beautiful views of the Stok Kangri mountain range and the Indus Valley, it also helps your body adjust to the altitude. Spend the night in Leh.

During today's sightseeing you visit Shey palace and Thiksey Monastery. Thiksey is a beautiful monastery and is sometimes called the mini Potala. It contains stupas, statues, thankas, and wall paintings. There is also a large pillar engraved with the Buddha's teachings. The sightseeing is by private cars as Shey and Thiksey are about 10 kms out of Leh.
In the morning, you will visit the Leh Durbar, the residence of the royal family built in the 17th century. The Durbar is located on a hilltop and offers a spectacular bird's eye view of the city. Apart from this; you will also visit the Shankar Gompa (Monastery). Experience the local lifestyle at the Leh Bazaar. Enjoy the serene atmosphere of Leh while taking in the spiritual essence of this enchanting place. You leave the afternoon free to do what you like. You might like to do last minute shopping for the trek and spend time exploring Leh.

After breakfast, you drive to Lamayuru and on the way visit Alchi monastery. This is the oldest monastery in Ladakh and is situated on the bank of the Indus River about 70 km from Leh. After Alchi, you drive for a further 55 km to Lamayuru Monastery (3,510m). After lunch, you'll walk over Prinkiti La (3,700m) and descend to Wanla village (3,150m).

After breakfast; today, you drive to Yulching Village via Singge La (5,120m). You'll opt to drive this section as there is a jeep track. It is early days on the trek, and yet not sufficiently acclimatised to walk over a 5,000m pass. So, you continue the drive again over Chuchokhuri La (3,970m). After crossing the pass, you drive down to the Zanskar River and to the Nerak village. Today, you'll enjoy a truly spectacular drive, and it is a wonderful start to the trip and you'll have time in the afternoon to explore Nerak village.

After leaving Nerak, you have a steady climb to reach the top of Laban La (3,980m) and you camp on the ridge nearby. In the afternoon, you can go for a walk around camp and enjoy the views.

After breakfast; from camp, you continue your ascent towards the Tarti La (4,950m). From the top of the pass, there is a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and landscape. Then you follow a trail descending to a river and after crossing it you walk downstream to your camp at Panatsey (3,730m).

Today, you continue walking along the river. Later on, you'll cross several rivers on foot so pack your sandals in your day pack. After the rivers, you continue on a gentle gradient along the valley up to the campsite.

After leaving Tsogo, you follow a trail with a gentle climb towards a small pass. After crossing the pass you continue walking up the valley towards Namtse La (4,400m ). After crossing the pass, you'll descend until reaching Honara. You continue to descend until reaching the jeep track where you walk on it for only 1km and in practice there is very little, if any, traffic. You'll camp in the meadows near the Zanskar River.

Today is a well-earned rest day for the group in Zangla. At 3,430m, it is the lowest camp on the itinerary so is a good place to rest. Today, you will explore the area and do some sightseeing by vehicle. You will first visit the superb monastery of Karsha. This is a magnificent building that is culturally very important. In the afternoon you can visit the Nunnery monastery and the royal palace of Zangla. Your crew will go to Padum to get resupplies for the rest of the trek.

Today, from Zangla village you'll start walking through the most remote section of the trek. The trail is in a beautiful gorge until you get to Daat. This area does not see many trekkers and according to locals, there are less than four groups per year. You are now walking along the old salt route. The people of Zanskar used to take yak products and barley over to Tshokar Lake in exchange for salt.
It is a steady ascent up the Zangla River to your camp at Zangla Sumdo (3,850m). You have several river crossings on the walk to Zangla Sumdo. Please make sure you have your sandals and walking poles in your day pack. The river crossings are likely to have water up to knee high given normal weather conditions. If the water level is low it can be an easy half day to reach the camp but if the water level is high it can take up to 7 hours. The walk is in a beautiful gorge and the trail is not too challenging.

After breakfast; from camp, you follow a valley on the left side and start your ascent towards Niri La (5,150m). It takes about 3 hours to the top of the pass. You descend on a good trail for 2 hours until reaching Niri Doksa (4,400m). This is the summer pasture for Shade Village.

Today; you walk along the left bank of the river. Afterward, you start the gentle approach to Lar La (4,850m) taking about 2 hours to reach the top of the pass. You descend on a good trail for about 2 hours until we reach Ningri Doksa (4,370m). Like Niri Doksa, this is the summer pasture for Shade Village.

After breakfast; from camp, you start the ascent up to the Rothang La (5,000m). After crossing the pass, you descend and continue walking on a good trail to Shade Village (4,290m). Along the way, you pass shepherd looking after their animals of yaks, cows, sheep, and goats. After getting to camp it is worth exploring the village

You walk alongside the Niri Chu until reaching its confluence with the Tsarap Chu. From there you head south and walk to Yatak (4,000m).

After breakfast; from camp, you continue following the Tsarap Chu until reaching the Phugtal monastery. This is a dramatic building clinging to the cliff. Temples and monastic residences date from the 10th Century. After visiting the monastery, you continue walking to Purne village (3,850m). This place overlooks the confluence of the Tsarap Chu with the Lung Nag Chu, a tributary of the Zanskar.

From camp, today you walk to Tabla village (4,100m). In the afternoon you can explore this traditional Zanskari village. It is surrounded by fields growing barley and black cumin.

After breakfast; from Tabla, you enter a narrow gorge before a steep ascent to a ridge. From here there are good views of Kargyak river and its plains dotted with grazing yaks. You cross the Phirtse River before getting to camp at the base of Phirtse La (4,750m).

This is a tough day and probably the most demanding of the whole trek. After breakfast you start early in the morning by crossing a small river and then ascend to Phirtse La (5,490m). The view is superb as you can see snow-covered mountains and the high peaks of Zanskar. You descend on a trail on a glacier covered with tricks and boulders to the plains at Chumik Marpo (4,750m).

Today, fter breakfast; you walk through a large river plain with many yak grazing on the grass. You cross by foot a river called, Khala Meera, and a few other streams. At Lingti (4,750m) and nearby we are likely to meet the Changpa who live in a nomadic camp.

Today you have an easier walk along the plains to Sarchu (4,200m) where you end the trek. You meet your vehicles for the drive over Taglung La (5,300m) to Rumtse (4,240m). It is a lovely place for the last night of the trip sleeping in a tent.

After breakfast, you will drive along the river bank and follow the road that gradually rises through the views of Hemis. After visiting the important monastery of Hemis, you will return to Leh.

Price for the trip:
- The trip cost always depends on group size, hotel accommodation category and client’s desire budget
- The included itinerary is a guideline and standard pattern which AlpineTrav you. This trekking itinerary can be modified according to your time and requirements
- The itinerary shall be changed after an understanding between both AlpineTrav and the client. Additional activities could be either added or reduced as per client’s request before the trip confirmation
- Price shall be adjusted in our mutual understanding, if the client intends to add some services we shall charge him/ her for those additional services and if he/she intends to lessen some services, we shall wave the charges accordingly
- The itinerary is published in full board services for the better understanding to the client. Among many options such as hotel facilities in Leh, the client can make his/her own choice

Useful Information
For your information, international flights and India’s “entry visa fee” are not included. Rooms are usually shared by two people unless you request a private room. So if you want to upgrade to better hotels in the cities, please contact us for your customized services.
Meals on the trek
All meals are included during the trekking period. We will provide three meals a day (B,L,D) during the trek. Since this is a full camping trek, our kitchen crew will serve freshly prepared meals during the trek. We consider hearty and delicious meals as a key component to the overall success of our trip. You can and is encouraged to bring along comfort food which you enjoy eating – chocolates, power bars, dry fruits, candies, other snacks etc. If you have any special dietary requirements please let us know in advance and we will be sure to pass your message to your guide.
Drinking Water
We provide boiled water for drinking purposes on all our treks. During meal time, you can ask your guide to fill the hot water for you. We strongly discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles such as mineral water on all our trips. Carrying a hot water bottle is highly recommended.
Accommodation on the trail
In Leh, we manage a three-star hotel offering a bed and breakfast plan on a twin-sharing basis. We can also manage a single room upon your request, but at an extra cost. Likewise, if you prefer more luxurious accommodations, it is also possible, but it costs more. Yet, due to the remote location and the lack of facilities at lodges or homestay along the trek, trekkers must stay in a tented camp throughout the expedition.
Trekking: Camping
Your accommodation during the trekking period will be fully tented camping. A tent will be provided for every 2 travellers with a foam mattress. In the case of a single, we will arrange a single tent for you by default at no additional cost. There will also be a kitchen tent, dining tent, toilet tent, table, chairs, and more for your comfort. Our trekking team will carry all of the tent equipment for your worry-free and easy journey.
Typical day:
The daily wake-up time while on the trek will be between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM. During the camping period, you will be provided with a small basin of hot water for your morning bath and a cup of tea in your tent. After a hearty breakfast, you will set out on the day’s hike. Before breakfast, you will need to pack your duffel bag as it will be loaded by the mules, while you have breakfast. After a 3-4 hour hike, you will stop for lunch. The afternoon hike is usually shorter and you will usually reach your destination in time for afternoon tea. The rest of the time can be spent exploring, doing laundry or relaxing with a good book.
Weather and temperature in Rumtse Tso Moriri
The region is a high-altitude cold desert with sunny days and freezing nights. Weather & Temperature
- Winter (Nov–April): Extremely cold with temperatures regularly plunging to -30°C. Heavy snowfall is common, often closing high mountain passes like Khardung La and Chang La for brief periods.
- Summer (May–Sept): The most popular time for tourism, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C, though nights remain cool (5°C to 15°C).
- Cold Desert Extremes: Some regions, such as Dras, can see temperatures as extreme as -60°C
