Langtang Valley Trek is a superb introduction for trekking rookies heading to Nepal among some of the most amazing scenery in the Himalayas. The Langtang Valley is the closest Himalayan destination from medieval Kathmandu valley. Ironically, despite being so close to Kathmandu, this Region is a blockbuster for the wild similar to the Tibetan highlands with heavenly rural landscapes that set the imaginations on overdrive. The valley runs west to east, on an even keel with the Tibetan border; yet, north of Kathmandu, we find famous trekking trails, that are not crowded like the Khumbu or Annapurna zones.

Langtang valley trek provides trekkers with an of the mind-blowing countryside which includes verdant forests to ascetic high mountain landscapes, and stunning views of the Ganesh, Langtang, and Jugal mountains that make you feel heady and dizzy. Similarly, The valley is bordered by high peaks of amazing features and is said to be a ‘treasure trove’ of alpine plants. The Langtang valley trek is spectacular in spring when the whole area is literally decked with a carpet of beautiful flowers that literally stuns the senses of its beholders.

Langtang Valley Trek starts from Syabrubesi, which is a day-long drive away from Kathmandu via Trisuli. The trail cuts through densely forested areas of blue pine, oaks, maple, spruce and rhododendron (one-fourth of the valley park is all verdant forest). The trail clings to the Langtang Khola river bank until Kyangjin gompa.

Langtang valley doesn’t only give us sublime views of Langtang Lirung at (7,234m) and the huge Ganesh peak at (7,406m), we also come down to earth by learning of the different ethnic lifestyles of the Tamang and Sherpa communities that inhabit this zone and we observe similarities that are so much like the people in Tibet.

Kyanjin Ri at (4,773 m) is roughly three hours up and something like an hour and a half down and it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayas if we desire to explore this area. After exploring the region, we hike back the same route to Syabrubesi.

From Kathmandu, we take a 9 - hour scenic drive to Syabru Besi, a little trading town for the Langtang area. After driving for 30 km, we approach pristine villages on the banks of the river Trishuli. We also get to view the enthralling panorama of the Himalaya, including the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and peaks of the Langtang region.

The first part of the trail crosses through the Bhote Koshi and follows the Langtang Khola. This trail is a gradual ascent up to Bamboo passing through landslide zones. Afterwards, we trek down gently to Rimche (2400m.) through Bamboo (1960m.) which lies at the banka of Langtang Khola. En-route we can see red pandas, playful monkeys and bears if you are lucky.

After breakfast, we continue climbing amidst occasional glimpses of Langtang Lirung between the trees. At Ghore Tabela (3000m), the trail emerges from the forest. While walking hereabouts, we get to observe playful white monkeys enjoying themselves and hear the sweet chirping of merry local birds. The trail continues to climb gently and the valley widens, passing a few temporary settlements used by herders who bring their livestock to graze in the high pastures during the summer months. There is a monastery we can visit shortly before arriving at the village of Langtang, the headquarters of the Langtang National Park. The houses of Langtang and its neighboring villages are of the flat-roofed Tibetan style, surrounded by stone walls enclosing fields of buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips and barley.

The trail skirts gradually through rich yak pastures and interesting customary villages of Muna to Singdun. We cross a wooden cantilever bridge and reach a wide valley after climbing a moraine. Finally, on ascending the mountain passes, we arrive at Kyagjing Gompa. There is a small monastery and a government-operated cheese factory hereabouts. We can sample some of the fresh cheese down here.

We get to explore interesting places like the monastery, cheese factory etc. We can climb Kyangjin Ri located at (4,773m) from where great views of snow-capped mountains are spread out in wonderful display right next to you. We can walk up the moraine to see the spectacular mountain ridges and undulating glaciers.

From Kyanjin, we take revert back to Lama Hotel. As we retrace our steps, we follow the Langtang Khola to Langtang village and on to Ghora Tabela. We haul up briefly for lunch and thereafter continue the steep descent to Lama Hotel to bunk out for the night.

Today is the last day of the trek. You will walk through the terraced field and green hills to reach Syabrubensi. En route, enjoy the rewarding views of the mighty mountains, Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal. Walking through the uphill forest of oak and hemlock, you will then gradually decline towards the rhododendron forest and pastures to reach the ridge at Phoprang Danda. Gently climbing the uphill, you will pass through a few Buddhist monasteries and reach Syabrubensi village.

It’s a 7-8 hours easy going cruise through a scenic highway and typical countryside on our way back to Kathmandu. We check into our hotel and the rest of the day is free to chill out and reflect on a wonderful trip.
