Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley Trek – 27 Days

Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley Trek is an excellent trekking adventure located in the Mustang and Manang region of Nepal. Where, this trek takes you into the restricted areas of Upper Mustang and Nar Phu Valley, which require special permits. After trekking in Upper Mustang, you will head to Nar Phu Valley, located northeast of the Annapurna Circuit. On the way, you will cross the Teri La Pass, which is at an altitude of 5,577 meters or 18,297 feet.

The trek will reward you with breathtaking views of the Himalayas. You will see unique landscapes with colorful valleys, red rock walls, and distinctive erosion structures that set Mustang apart from other regions. The Upper Mustang and Nar Phu Valley trek is a new trails recently opened to foreigners. Because of its remote location, they have developed a unique culture and traditions. And the descendants of the Tibetans who settled here centuries ago still live in the area.

The complete experience of immersing yourself in ancient Tibetan culture and getting a glimpse into diverse traditional practices will be overwhelming. Additionally, you will trek in remote Nepal and experience both camping and tea house trekking in one trek.

Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley Trek Itinerary

The Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley Trek takes you through a landscape as dry and arid as the Tibetan plateaus. You will trek amidst an almost barren and stunning landscape near the Nepal-Tibet border. Enjoy breathtaking views of high mountains and hills with sparse vegetation. The trek is also culturally rich. You will explore the forbidden kingdom of Lo Manthang, which has long been isolated and has a unique culture and traditions. Furthermore, you will visit the less frequented Nar Phu Valley, untouched by modernization. You will trek past ancient caves, centuries-old monasteries, medieval villages, and breathtaking mountain landscapes that will leave a lasting impression.

The Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley Trek begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The next day, you will explore Kathmandu and visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Similarly, you will take a 6-7 hour drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, then take another domestic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. Your trek will start from Jomsom and end with a trek to Dharapani, Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley. Along the way, you will trek through lush forests, waterfalls and streams, crossing suspension bridges.

Furthermore, you will pass through the quaint villages of Kagbeni, Chaile, Geling, and Charang before reaching the walled city of Lo Manthang. This region has remained secluded for a long time, where you can witness well-preserved Tibetan culture and traditions. You will trek past chortens, stupas, prayer wheels, and gem walls, important Tibetan Buddhist elements.

The trek will take you to the Teri La base camp, passing through the villages of Yara, Tangya, Yak Kharka and Samena River. You will spend a day acclimatizing at Samena River. Then, you will continue trekking to Teri La Base Camp and High Camp Teri La. The next day, you will cross the high pass, Teri La Pass, which is also the highest point of the trek. The next trek will take you to Nar village and Phu village, where the daily life of the locals has not changed much. Where you will see the presence of Tibetan Buddhism and visit Gompa and Lhakhang to learn more about the local culture and traditions. Finally, a trek from Meta to Dharapani via Koto will end your trek. Then, you will return to Kathmandu via Besisahar. The next day, you will board an international flight and fly out of Kathmandu with memories of a lifetime.

Day 01 :

Arrive in Kathmandu [1,350m/4,455ft] and transfer to Hotel.

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal. After completing visa formalities and collecting your luggage at the airport, please exit the arrival hall. Your tour leader will be waiting for you just outside the arrival hall and will take you to hotel in Kathmandu. Please look for a placard with your name on it at the exit of the arrival hall. Then depending on the time, you will have time to walk around the hotel and familiarize yourself near hotel.

Day 02 :

Sightseeing at Kathmandu, and Restricted area Permits Procedure

Today, Kathmandu tour; in which you will explore various UNESCO sites in Kathmandu. We will start our tour with a visit to Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal. We will witness the Hindu cremation ceremony at Aryaghat, located on the banks of the Bagmati River. And we will visit Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal. We can see the rich Tibetan culture at Boudhanath. Similarly, we will end the day’s tour by visiting Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal residence of Nepal.

Day 03 :

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara [827m/2,713ft], 6 - 7 hours

After a delicious breakfast in the morning, you will depart from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Enjoy a scenic drive to see the enchanting views of snow-capped mountains, green hills, terraced farmlands and hill villages. Furthermore, you will drive along the Trishuli River, a glacial river flowing from the Himalayas. And you will reach Pokhara Mount View Hotel via Prithvi Highway on your way to Pokhara, a popular tourist city of Nepal, and stay overnight.

Day 04 :

Fly to Jomsom [2,743m/8,999ft] and trek to Kagbeni [2,804m/9,199ft], 2 - 3 hours

Wake up early to take the morning flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. Enjoy a scenic flight over the Kali Gandaki Valley. Also, you will get to enjoy the best views of mountains like Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Furthermore, you will trek from the windy town of Jomsom to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang. Walk on an easy trek and enjoy the magnificent views of mountains like Tukuche, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. Stay at a any teahouse located at the top of the Tibetan village of Kagbeni.

Day 05 :

Trek from Kagbeni to Chaile [3,150m/10,334ft], 5 - 6 hours

After breakfast, today you will enter Upper Mustang, which is also a restricted area. You will follow the trail located on the eastern bank of the Kali Gandaki River. Furthermore, you will climb several cliffs on the northern side before reaching the Gurung village of Tangbe. Passing through Chhusang village, cross the Kali Gandaki and walk on a steep path on the way to Chaile village. And stay at the Teahouse or tented Camping.

Day 06 :

Trek from Chaile to Geling [3,570m/11,712ft], 6 - 7 hours

Today you will walk on a steep path leading to a pile of rocks. After crossing the river and descending, you will reach the sacred Rangchung Cave Monastery. This is one of the holiest sites in Mustang. The monastery is decorated with colorful prayer flags, and the flowing river adds to the charm as you climb the stone steps into the cave. You will see gemstone inscriptions carved on the walls and thangkas in the monastery. From Syangboche, hike through gradual uphills, and after a steep descent, you will reach the village of Jeling. The village has a large chorten and two gompas. Where you will stay in a teahouse or tented camping.

Day 07 :

Trek from Geling to Chharang [3,620m/11,877ft], 6 - 7 hours

The road from Geling to Charang is steep and you will be trekking through farmland. Along the way, you will come across Gurung and Tamang villages. Continue climbing to Nyi La Pass, located at an altitude of 3,950 meters or 12,959 feet at the top of the valley. Nyi La Pass is the second highest point on the Lo Manthang trek, and it offers a spectacular view of the mountain scenery. The road then descends, and after a short walk, you will reach Charang. The beautiful village of Charang is located in the Charang Chu Canyon, and you will see a large medieval fort on the eastern side of the village. Where stay in a teahouse or tented camping.

Day 08 :

Trek to Lo Manthang [3,840m/12,598ft], 4 - 5 hours

After breakfast, today you will start the trek uphill, and you will pass many picturesque villages and large chortens. The chortens are located on the border of Charang and Lo Manthang. And after walking for some time, you will see the forbidden kingdom of Lo Manthang. You will enter Lo Manthang from the north, and before entering the village, you have to go around the walls. On the way, you will see amazing views of high mountains such as Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I, and others. Where stay in a teahouse or tented camping.

Day 09 :

Rest and excursion day at Lo Manthang

Today you will explore Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the Lo Kingdom. It was founded by Ame Pai in the 1380s. The main attractions of Lo Manthang are its high white mud and brick walls, the monastery or gompa, and the royal palace. The oldest building in Lo Manthang is the royal palace, built in the 1400s. The palace is located in the center of the city where the king and queen reside. Although there is a ceremonial king, the locals consult him on various matters. Exploring the various gompas or monasteries of Lo Manthang will give you an insight into their unique culture and traditions. This is one of the few places where you will see the Bon culture, which predates Buddhism. You will also observe the presence of Tibetan Buddhism in the region. Visit the Thukchen Monastery, which has 108 mural mandalas - one of a kind in the world. An important festival in the Himalayas, Tizi, is celebrated at the Thukchen Monastery.

Similarly; Visit Thukchen Gompa, a 15th century classical Tibetan style gompa with a large red assembly hall. Furthermore, Thukchen Gompa has frescoes on its walls. Visit Namgyal Gompa, a wonderful mountain gompa that is socially, religiously and legally important in the region and functions as a local court. Visit the Tschen Shedrubling Monastic School, which trains young monks in the region, and is also part of the Monastic Museum. Similarly; visit Choprang Gompa, which offers a glimpse into the local culture and traditions. Furthermore, hike to the popular Champa Lhakhang, with its large Buddha statue and wall-painted mandala. And stay night at Lo Manthang.

Day 10 :

Trek from Lo Manthang to Yara [3,900m/12,795ft], 5 - 6 hours

You will ascend into a glacial valley with a reddish-brown view of Lo Manthang. Then, you will cross two small passes, Lo La and Dhi La, before reaching the village of Ra Dhi. The path descends further, and you will cross the Puyung River and walk along the riverbank on your way to Yara. In the dry season, you will enjoy the view of natural sand castles from the top of Yara Mountain. Where, stay overnight in a campsite.

Day 11 :

Trek from Yara to Tangbe [3,240m/10,629ft], 6 - 7 hours

Trek along a winding path to the small town of Tangbe. You will climb uphill and then descend to the Dhecheng River. After crossing the river, the path becomes steeper, and you will walk through grasslands. Along the way, you will find Shaligram, a black stone with fossils, and ammonoid fossils on the riverbank. After crossing the town of Dhi, you will walk along a path filled with centuries-old sand dunes. Continue your trek to Tangbe. Along the way, you will see breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Where, spend the night at a campsite.

Day 12 :

Trek from Tangbe to Yak Kharka [4,100m/13,451ft] 5 - 6 hours

Today you will trek from Tangbe to Yak Kharka. Walk through barren land, which will take you to grasslands where domesticated yaks graze. Yak Kharka is a grazing area for yaks. You will also see temporary huts built by yak herders. Overnight at Yak Kharka.

Day 13 :

Trek to Samena Khola [4,220m/13,845ft], 4 - 5 hours

Walk on flat terrain on the trek from Yak Khark to Samena Khola. Today you will trek on a relatively easy trail. You will also see old farmlands before reaching Samena Khola. The main attraction of the trek is the sound of the rushing river of Samena Khola in the dry terrain. Where, spend the night at Samena Khola.

Day 14 :

Rest Day and Acclimatization at Samena Khola

Today you will acclimatize at Samena River and then move to higher altitudes. Explore the area and enjoy the amazing mountain scenery. You can choose a leisurely walk or a trek. Spend the night at Samena River.

Day 15 :

Trek to Teri La Base Camp [4,630m/15,190ft], 6 - 7 hours

Today you will trek from the Samena River to Teri La Base Camp and return to the Samena River. You will climb uphill and follow the path to a sparsely vegetated area along the banks of the Yak River. The next trek will take you to Teri La Base Camp, which offers amazing views of the Teri Mountains and neighboring mountain peaks. When trekking at high altitudes, it is best to trek at high altitudes and return at lower altitudes. So spend the night at Teri La Base Camp.

Day 16 :

Trek to Teri La High Camp [5,100m/16,732ft], 4 - 5 hours

Trek from Teri La Base Camp to High Camp Teri La; along the way you will see amazing mountain views. The high altitude will add to the difficulty of the trek. You will follow the trail along the Rijung Chha River that flows at the foot of Teri Himal, crossing Yak Kharka. Before reaching High Camp Teri La, you need to take care for the trek ahead as you will be walking on a steep moraine trail. High Camp offers uninterrupted views of mountains like Purung Himal and Damodar Himal range. Where, stay in a High Camp Teri La.

Day 17 :

Trek to Teri La Phedi [5,000m/16,404ft] via Teri La Pass [5,577m/18,297ft], 6 - 7 hours

The trek from High Camp to Teri La Phedi is one of the most challenging days of the trek. You will cross the 5,577-meter or 18,297-foot high Bhanjyang, which is also the highest point of the trek. If you start your trek early, you can witness a unique sunrise over the Himalayas from the top of the pass. Teri La Pass offers breathtaking views of mountains like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Purkung. Enjoy the incredible mountain views before descending to the other side of the pass to Teri La Phedi. Spend the night at Teri La Phedi.

Day 18 :

Trek Teri La Phedi to Labse Khola [4,800m/15,748ft], 5 - 6 hours

You will continue to walk downhill before reaching the flat land. Trekking through the flat terrain of Nar Phu Valley will take you to the Labse River. Enjoy a relatively easy hike compared to yesterday and enjoy the wonderful scenery along the way. During the trek in the middle of summer, you will see yaks and sheep grazing. Spend the night at the Labse River.

Day 19 :

Trek Labse Khola to Yak Kharka [4,600m/15,091ft], 6 - 7 hours

Today you will walk through the wilderness on the way to Yak Kharka. Further, you will also descend, where you will follow the Labse River on the way to Yak Kharka. On the way, you will come across some temporary huts built by shepherds. Further, you will walk through green pastures where livestock, especially yaks, graze. Where, spend the night in Yak Kharka.

Day 20 :

Trek Yak Kharka to Nar Gaon [3,490m/11,450ft], 5 - 7 hours

On the way to Nar village, you will be trekking on a downhill path. Moreover, you need to take utmost care while going downhill. Nar village is said to have got its name from the Nar river, and this village is located on the northern part of the Annapurna trekking route. Visit the local monasteries and get an insight into the local culture. Moreover, you will learn more about the local culture if you interact with the locals. And spend the night in Nar village.

Day 21 :

Trek Nar Gaon to Kyang [3,800m/12,467ft], 5 - 6 hours

Today you will be walking on a relatively easy path. You will be hiking downhill; however, you should be careful. Furthermore, you will be hiking downhill along the Phu River, crossing the Mani Wall. Furthermore, you will ascend to the village of Kyang, located above the Phu River. You will share the path with mules. Where, spend the night in Kyang.

Day 22 :

Trek Kyang to Phu Gaon [4,080m/13,385ft], 4 - 5 hours

Today you will walk past Buddhist chortens and stupas and enjoy the amazing views of the high Himalayas. Walk along the rocky path and follow the Phu River on your way to Phu Gaon, which is located across the Phu River. Furthermore, you will trek past Lakhang Monastery, which is claimed to be one of the oldest monasteries in the world. Lakhang is also known as the blessed home of the gods in Phu Gaon. Where, spend the night in Koto.

Day 23 :

Trek Phu Gaon to Meta [3,560m/11679ft], 5 - 6 hours

After leaving the hidden valley of Phu village, you will walk up and down the path. On your way to Meta, you will cross many suspension bridges and streams. The trek will reward you with amazing views of mountains like Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. Also, you may get a chance to see blue sheep. Spend the night in Meta.

Day 24 :

Trek Meta to Koto [2,600m/8,530ft], 5 - 7 hours

Day 25 :

Trek from Koto to Dharapani [1,960m/6,430ft], 5 - 6 hours

Today you will trek along the Annapurna Circuit trekking route, winding your way through snow-capped mountains, green hills, terraced farmlands, hill villages and rivers to Dharapani. The journey will take 5-6 hours and will end at Dharapani, the final stop of our Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley trek, at an altitude of 1,960 meters/6,430 feet.

Day 26 :

Dharapani to Besisahar [760m/2,493ft] to Kathmandu [1,350m/4,430ft], 7 - 8 hours drive

Today you will return to Kathmandu from Dharapani via Besisahar. Enjoy a scenic drive on the winding mountain highway, passing green hills, terraced fields, hill villages and rivers. After the long drive, relax in your hotel room in Kathmandu. In the evening, you can walk the lively streets of Thamel and do some shopping for souvenirs before your international flight the next day. And spend the night at hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 27 :

Departure, or join optional activities

Today you will board your international flight back home with wonderful memories. A representative from AlpineTrav Treks & Expeditions will drop you off at the airport. It is advised that you arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before your scheduled flight. And we pray for your safe journey home. We will remember the wonderful times we spent together. ACCOMMODATION

We will stay in Kathmandu at Hotel Vajra and Pokhara Mount View or similar category, which will be tented camp for trekking. All this is included in the cost of the trip. While foam mattresses will be provided for tent camping. We will also provide pillow, dining tent, table, chair, solar light, shower tent, toilet tent facilities for your convenience once you reach the camping. And (cooking utensils and more)

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, your accommodation will be on a twin-sharing basis and if you wish to have a single room, upon request you will have to pay a single supplement as mentioned in the trip cost. For Trekking, in case of single by default, a single tent will be arranged for you at no extra cost.

MEALS ON THE TREK

We will serve typical Nepali cuisine, various ethnic dishes as well as all kinds of international dishes (Tibetan, Chineses, Continental, Italian, and so on, Indian cuisine) from pizza and chips to apple pie. And we will enjoy a variety of hot drinks and breakfast, including bread, eggs, pancakes, muesli, granola, konflux, porridge as well as hot milk with fresh fruits. And a hot lunch will be served on the way to our next destination. Upon reaching the destination, dinner and breakfast will be served at the campsite where we will spend the night. During the tented camping, freshly cooked hygienic food or packed food (as per the conditions) will be provided. However, in Kathmandu and Pokhara, we will only provide breakfast. Because you can taste the food you like, as there are high-quality delicious foods from different countries available. Therefore, you will have to arrange your own lunch and dinner during your stay in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

DRINKING WATER

We provide boiled water for drinking purposes on all our climbing time, homestay or camping treks. We strictly discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles such as mineral water on all our treks. Therefore, carrying a hot water bottle is highly recommended.

Best time to trek Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley

Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley trek can be done all year round. However, the best time to trek is from March to November. During these months, the day time is pleasant, while the temperature can drop significantly at night. Since trekking in the upper Mustang region falls in the rain shadow zone, trekking is also possible during the monsoon. This is one of the few places in Nepal where monsoon trekking is enjoyable. However, it is advisable to avoid trekking in the harsh winters as the higher valleys can become inaccessible due to snow. Also, winter is the time of the year when locals also migrate to the lower regions to escape the cold. The weather in the upper Mustang is windy and dusty during the day, and gets very cold after sunset. Therefore, it would be better to start the trek early to avoid trekking in dusty and windy weather. Don’t forget to bring windproof and warm clothes to keep your body warm.

Furthermore, you will cross mountain passes above 5,000 meters, including Nyi La Pass, Lo La Pass, Dhi La Pass, and Teri La Pass. Where you will trek on difficult treks in remote areas. Moreover, you need to be physically fit to do this physically demanding high-altitude trek. Experienced trekkers will enjoy this trek, and having experience in high-altitude trekking will be beneficial. For which, you will trek for a minimum of 3 hours and a maximum of 7 hours per day. Other important notes for this trek

You will need a restricted area permit to trek the Mustang Teri La Pass and Nar Phu Valley
Solo trekking in this area is prohibited, and you will need a group of two or more trekkers accompanied by a government-licensed guide.
Flights to and from Jomsom may be cancelled or delayed, so it would be wise to have a few buffer days.
This is a partially camping trek that passes through remote areas. This means that you will be camping for a certain part of the trek and spending the night. You will be spending the night at Yak Kharka, Samena Khola, Teri La Base Camp, Teri La High Camp, Teri La Phedi, Labse Khola and Yak Kharka Camping Tents. Apart from these places, you will be spending the night at the best tea houses or lodges available during the trek.
