Tengboche Monastery Trek via Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri

The Trek to Tengboche Monastery via Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri encompasses the best of the Everest region, its culture and experiences. This trek, with its stunning features, is an itinerary to discover the grandeur of Mount Everest. Visit Mount Everest (8,848 meters), the enchanting Gokyo Lake, and the vibrant Sherpa settlements with unique culture and lifestyle at the highest point in the world.

The Tengboche Trek via Gokyo Lake begins in the Kathmandu Valley where we take a day off for sightseeing and preparation before heading to Lukla. In Kathmandu, we visit the capital’s World Heritage Sites including Pashupatinath, Swyambunath, Boudhnath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Then scenic flight over the Nepali Himalayas takes you to Lukla. And starting the trek, we head towards Phakding. From there, the trek takes us to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the naturally beautiful Everest National Park. Which is also home to various flora and fauna besides the magnificent Himalayan panorama.

Taking a day off in Namche for acclimatization, we head towards the settlement of Gokyo Lakes or Tengboche. Tengboche Monastery and its Sherpa heritage. And Buddhist background is famous for offering views of the Himalayas including Mount Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), Thamserku and many other peaks. Similarly from Tengboche, the route will pass through Phortse village via Machermo, then a trek to Gokyo village will bring us to the face of the sparkling Gokyo Lakes. And we will descend towards Dole village before ending the trek by climbing Gokyo Ri (5364m). Tengboche Trek via Gokyo Lake will trek to Lukla along with Gokyo Lakes. Then we bid farewell to the Himalayas, After domestic fly to Kathmandu from Lukla, will end of trek.

Day 01 :

Arrive in Kathmandu airport and transfer to the Hotel

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal. After completing visa formalities and collecting your luggage at the airport, please exit the arrival hall. Your tour leader will be waiting for you just outside the arrival hall and will take you to hotel in Kathmandu. Please look for a placard with your name on it at the exit of the arrival hall. Then depending on the time, you will have time to walk around the hotel and familiarize yourself near hotel.

Day 02 :

Kathmandu, Sightseeing and trek Preparation

Today is a full-day Kathmandu tour; in which you will explore various UNESCO sites in Kathmandu. We will start our tour with a visit to Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal. We will witness the Hindu cremation ceremony at Aryaghat, located on the banks of the Bagmati River. And we will visit Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal. We can see the rich Tibetan culture at Boudhanath. Similarly, we will end the day’s tour by visiting Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal residence of Nepal.

Day 3 :

Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding

Early in the morning we take a spectacular flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2827m), which flies parallel to the vast Himalayan mountains. The flight time is approximately 30 minutes. After landing in Lukla we will have time to explore the village, where our Sherpa guide team will load our trekking equipment. After a light tea and coffee we will start our trek by descending towards the Dudh Koshi River where we join the main trek to Namche Bazaar located above Chaurikharka (2713m). The trek is easy and after passing the small village of Ghat (2550m) there will be a short walk to Phakding. And today we will spend the night in Phakding.

Day 4 :

Phakding to Namche Bazaar

From Phakading we cross the river and head up the valley, the path staying close to the river valley and surrounded by beautiful blue pine and rhododendron forests which are very spectacular in the spring months, when the flowers are in bloom. We cross the Dudh Kosi River at Benkar, where there are lovely glimpses of the snow-capped peaks of Kusum Kanguru (6369m) and Thamserku (6623m). From here it is just a short walk to Monjo (2835m), where we arrive in time for lunch. The afternoon walk is a bit more difficult and involves a steep climb to Namche Bazaar. From Monjo we have to take a short walk to the entrance of the national park, before we cross the Dudh Kosi River and reach Jorsale (2805m). The trek continues upwards on generally flat terrain, turning back to the right bank at the confluence of the Bhote Kosi and Dudh Kosi rivers, where we begin the steep climb to Namche Bazaar. After crossing a large and stable suspension bridge over the river, we slowly ascend at a steady pace. There will be some great photographic opportunities as we see peaks like Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse for the first time.

Day 5 :

Acclimatization day in Namche Bazar

Today we will stay in Namche Bazaar for the second night to acclimatize to the weather so that you can watch both the sunrise and sunset from the Everest View Hotel located above the village. It will take 1 hour to reach. The stunning views from this place include a great view of the Khumbu peaks and a great view of Mount Everest. After breakfast, various options are available. Perhaps you can hike to Thami (3810m) through the beautiful Bhote Khola River Valley or visit the National Park Headquarters to see an interesting display of Sherpa lifestyle and culture.

Day 6 :

Namche Bazaar to Dole

Today we have to climb steeply from Namche Bazaar to Kyangjuma village. In Kyangjuma, we can contemplate the magnificent views of Thamserku, Kantega and Ama Dablam. The difficult part of the day will definitely be the ascent of Mong La, a very attractive place hanging on the peak of Khumbila mountain. The medieval historical chorten stands at the center of the settlement of Mong La. In Mong La, we spend some time on the top of Mong La to admire the surrounding snow-capped mountains and valleys while enjoying lunch. The most attractive feature of today's trek is the wealth of flora and fauna, including wild flowers and rhododendrons, that we see along the way. We can also see wild animals such as pheasants, mountain goats and the tiny musk deer. Continuing our trek through the forest, some waterfalls and bridges, we reach Dole.

Day 7 :

Dole to Machermo

Today is another short day that starts with a steep climb from the small Dole Valley and then gradually climbs up the Dudh Kosi Valley, above the river. The walking is easy, but we will still feel the effects of altitude even on the smallest hills. The desolate alpine scenery with small clumps of scrub juniper is a stark contrast to the snow-capped white peaks and dark blue sky. After two hours, we will reach Luja (4360m), and after another hour of walking we will reach our lodge in Machermo (4465m) where you will spend the evening. After lunch there is the option to cross the rocky moraines at the base of Cajo Ri (6168m) and Machermo Peak (6073m). However, keep your eyes open for this! Three yaks were killed here in 1974 and a Sherpa girl was injured while trying to fight off a hairy, monkey-like intruder who may have been a hungry grizzly bear!

Day 8 :

Machermo to Gokyo Lake

After breakfast, from Machermo we climb to the summit of Chorton from where we enjoy excellent views of the valley below and the northern part of Kangtega, Thamserku and Cho-Oyu at (8153m). As the route passes Chorton, a valley opens up that crosses the mountains and after a short, easy hike we reach Phangka at (4480 m). Phangka is an area where 40 people died in an avalanche in 1995. We descend along the riverbank before starting the climb to the terminal moraine of the Ngojumpa glacier. This is a steep climb on the moraine. After crossing an iron bridge over the river, the route levels off, following the valley to the first lake at 4690m, called Longpongo, where we have the chance to see llama footprints on the rocks. As we take in the views of the second lake, Taboche Tso, we gaze in awe at the turquoise blue body of water glistening in the sun. Just before the second lake, we reach the third lake, two connected by a flowing stream. The village of Gokyo is neatly situated next to the third lake and with the towering Cho-Oyu mountain in the background creating stunning views, it could be an ideal spot to overdrive our video cameras in this amazing area.

Day 9 :

Rest day in Gokyo explore at Gokyori or 5th lake

Today will be the highlight of our trip as we reach Gokyo Ri early in the morning to witness the spectacular sunrise over Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks. Afterwards, we return to our hotel in Gokyo before exploring other key attractions in Gokyo.

Day 10 :

Gokyo to Phortse

Today we retrace our steps from Gokyo Lake and head back to Phortse. Phortse Valley is a picturesque village nestled in a patchwork of fields surrounded by cliffs. We climb up through sometimes steep and sometimes steep paths and then reach Phortse Valley from where, once again, we will have the opportunity to enjoy magnificent views of Kantega, Thamserku and Ama Dablam (6856 m). Phortse is about 5 hours walk away, where we spend the night. And explore the village.

Day 11 :

Trek to Tengboche via Pangboche

Follow the U-shaped path. Looking towards Pangboche, which shelters the oldest monastery in the Khumbu region. The path continues towards Tengboche Monastery, which is situated in a glade surrounded by dwarf cedar trees and rhododendrons, and is considered the main Buddhist center of Khumbu. Again we see the Himalayas views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and, Thamserku and Ama Dablam Mountains.

Day 12 :

Trek from Tengboche to Monjo

Start your trek early after breakfast. Descend to the Imjatse River, then a steep climb of about an hour will take you to Sanasa. From there, a winding path will take you to Namche Bazaar. Have your lunch for the day at a nice restaurant in Namche. Then, as you look back at the village and Mount Everest in the background, you will follow the rugged path into the lush forest. You may also spot musk deer, Himalayan Tahr, or the rare red panda. The path takes a steep descent to the Dudh Koshi River. Cross the river via the suspension bridge at Jorsale. This is the buffer zone of the Everest National Park. From there, you will walk south to Monjo village. Monjo is a small village that is also known as the checkpoint or entrance to the national park. Stay here tonight.

Day 13 :

Trek from Monjo to Lukla

After breakfast, you will take the first leg of the trek down to Benkar. From there, you will walk across a suspension bridge and reach the ghat for lunch. From there, continue your trek through a steep gorge. The climb is gradual until you reach the village of Chablung. Cross a dense forest of birch and juniper; then, you will soon reach the Pasang Lhamu memorial gate. Where you will leave your bags after reaching your standard lodge in Lukla, then hit the road and have fun with the locals. There is a lot to explore in the small village. There are various shops in the area where you can find lovely souvenirs to take back home. The people here are friendly and welcoming. You can grab some locally made drinks and enjoy your last night in the Khumbu region with the locals and our team.

Day 14 :

Fly to Kathmandu from Lukla

We will wake up early, have breakfast, and prepare for the arrival of our flight back to Ramechhap Airport. After landing in Ramechhap, you will be transferred for the 5-hour drive back to Kathmandu. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore at your leisure.

Day 15 :

International Departure

Thank you for joining us on this trek. It was a pleasure to guide you through this beautiful part of the world. As per your flight time, we will drop you off at the airport. Please plan to arrive at least 3 hours before your flight for check-in and security procedures. Safe travels!

ACCOMMODATION

We will stay in Kathmandu at Hotel Vajra or similar category, which is a standard tea house/lodge during the trek, and this is all included in the cost of the trip. However; during the trek, your accommodation will be in simple teahouses/lodges with basic and shared facilities.

Most teahouses/lodges in the Everest region have squat toilets: most bathrooms are usually shared but we will arrange for you and your group to stay in local lodges on a daily basis. Please note that some of them are very basic and a sense of adventure is required.

In Kathmandu, your accommodation will be on a twin-shared basis and if you wish to have a single room, upon request you will need to pay a single supplement as mentioned in the trip cost. However, please note that there are less teahouses along the trekking route that do not allow single room accommodation. Paying a supplement guarantees a room in Kathmandu, but this may not always be possible in high altitude trekking areas. It’s generally impossible to arrange private rooms. This is the case even if you’re willing to pay extra since the teahouses owners will not give out a private room if it means someone else goes without a room.

MEALS ON THE TREK

During the trek, we will serve typical Nepali food, various ethnic dishes as well as all kinds of international dishes (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, and so on, Indian cuisine) from pizza and chips to apple pie. And breakfast includes bread, eggs, pancakes, muesli, granola, konflux, porridge as well as tea, coffee and hot milk with fresh fruits. Similarly, hot lunch will be served on the way to our next destination. Upon reaching the destination, meals and breakfast will be served at the teahouse/lodge where we will spend the night. However, in Kathmandu, we will only provide breakfast. Because you can taste the food you like, as there are high-quality delicious foods from different countries available. Therefore, you will have to arrange your own lunch and dinner during your stay in Kathmandu.

DRINKING WATER

We provide boiled water for drinking purposes in all our teahouses/lodges or camping treks. We strictly discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles such as mineral water on all our treks. Therefore, it is highly recommended to carry a hot water bottle. And you can ask your staff to fill the bottle with water.

NOTICE: Domestic flights to and from Lukla.

Unexpected weather conditions in the Everest region can sometimes cause Lukla flights to be canceled. So; what do you do if your flight is canceled at the last minute? If you have limited time in Nepal, we have several alternative options for Lukla flight cancellation. Be well-informed about this important issue in advance!

How Hard is it to trek to Tengboche and Gokyo?

The Tengboche and Gokyo trek is a moderate/demanding trek that does not require any technical expertise in mountaineering. It is basically a long trek up to an altitude of 4,790m/15,712ft. The trek is only difficult because the path goes up and down through various terrains. Therefore, you should be moderately fit and enjoy walking and acclimatizing to high altitude conditions. Having previous experience to participate in this trek is definitely beneficial but not mandatory. All travelers need to be in good physical health to fully participate in this trek. We advise you to prepare for your trek by exercising regularly, walking, running or going to the gym. The fitter you are, the more enjoyable the trekking experience will be. All our itineraries are prepared with every aspect in mind and allow ample time for weather acclimatization.

What is the best time to trek to Tengboche and Gokyo?

The best time to trek Tengboche and Gokyo is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) months when the weather is favorable and suitable for climbing at high altitudes. These seasons offer crystal-clear mountain views with clear skies. The trek can also be done in February and early September but the trek is best done during the above months. What Kinds of gear are needed to Tengboche and Gokyo trek?

Tengboche and Gokyo trek is a teahouse/lodge trek. Unlike the peak climb, you will not be sleeping in tents but at teahouses or lodges.
