The Thorong Peak at 6,144 meters above the sea level stands tall in the Annapurna Region. Reaching Thorong peak is a glorious journey that traverses through beautiful trails along many Manangi and Gurung villages, set in the lap of the Himalayas. The Thorong Peak Climbing takes us through verdant hills and into the heart of the Himalayas to offer spine-chilling adventure and ecstatic views. Leading us to the barren lands of Manang, we are bound to be in awe with the grandeur of the journey.

Beginning in the city of Kathmandu, we head to Jagat and eventually to Pisang via Dharapani and Chame. The trail will also entail the cross to high pass of Thorong La (5416m) and witness wonderful views of mountains ranges of Manaslu, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre. Starting at the low lands of Lamjung along the banks of the Marsyangdi River and through dense forests, we will make our way up to the arid region of Manang and finally enter the sacred Muktinath. The region is blessed with a bounty of flora, fauna ranging from wildflowers, birds of various kinds, the mountain goats, ibexes, and the elusive snow leopard. Along with this, the region is equally known for its beauty in culture and tradition. The people living in this region have many traditions which are very unique to Nepal. It is a non-technical trek however, it can get strenuous at times due to the long hours of walks. It is recommended for people who are the good physical condition. After the successful climb, we can relish in feats of our which almost feels like you’ve reached the top of the world.

Plan the day after the summit

We will start climbing early so that the wind does not affect us too much. After reaching the top, you can see the panoramic view of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains. It is a great place for photography and enjoying the view of Himalayas. After summit we will walk through windy terrain, following the downhill path. We also visit the temple complex of Muktinath which is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Surrounding the temple are 108 streams where people bathe before performing various rituals. There are small houses on the way which give a panoramic view of the tea. Crossing small streams we enter Kagbeni. And we’ll see some suspension bridges, draped with prayer flags with the Nilgiri Himal as a backdrop. Before entering Jomsom, we will cross a wooden bridge and walk along a path lined with apple trees. And from Jomsom we will take a morning flight. Strong winds prohibit taking flight in the later part of the day. If flight are canceled or delayed, we have options. (Private 4WD jeep). We will be flying or drive over the extremely harsh landscape of this region. In the evening Pokhara, we can enjoy the lakeside restaurants to celebrate the successful completion of the climb. And the next day we will fly to Kathmandu with a view of the beautiful Himalayas and breathtaking landscape.

Essential Information

Difficulty

Grading: 7-8 (Strenuous)

Climbing Thorang Peak is considered tough as it is a long trek/climbing in remote areas going above 5500m and some days sleeping at an altitude of more than 5000m. Mountaineers require excellent physical condition. On the peak climbing day, you will leave the camp at 2 am and return to the base camp only in the afternoon. This grade includes the use of climbing equipment (harness, ice axe, crampons, mountaineering boots, climbing). Previous experience is required and we also offer a climbing course at base camp before the actual climb where your guides will teach you the correct way to use the equipment.

Prerequisite

To partake in Thorong peak climb, an excellent physical level is required as this trip involves a longer duration of trek/climb. Previous experience of high altitude treks is of great advantage while climbing a 6000m peak. While the previous experience of trek/climb is a requirement, our carefully planned itinerary allows people without previous experience to join as well. Proper rest and acclimatization days with an overnight at high camp have been kept in the itinerary. You should also be both mentally and physically prepared for this trip. A fierce determination, burning desire and teamwork is required. We have allowed ample time for acclimatization and contingency day on our itinerary where your guide will teach you the proper way to use the equipment.

Weather

The best seasons for Thorong Peak Climb are Autumn (from October till the end of November) and Spring (April to May). Temperatures will drop considerably as you ascend higher every day. The nights are cold (between 5C to -5C) and the days are sunny and hot (between 10C to 20C). Mornings are usually clear, with clouds building up in the afternoon and disappearing at night. Trekking and climbing during the monsoon seasons and winters are not recommended as the visibility is poor and limited whilst upper parts and high passes could be covered with snow.

April, October and November are the favoured months.

Insurance

It’s mandatory and highly recommended to get travel insurance before embarking on any adventurous trips in Nepal. We advise all our clients to get travel insurance that covers up emergency helicopter evacuation that may be needed in case of the occurrence of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) or any other reasons in high altitudes where there are no other means of transportation available. It is advisable to review carefully the insurance and its coverages before making the final decision. Carry proof of your insurance with you on the holiday and leave a copy next to your kin. You must ensure that your insurance provides an adequate level of protection and covers you for the activities involved.
