Yalung Ri summit climb, a relatively easy and non-technical climb of 5630m

Trip Highlights

  • Attainable with no previous climbing experience
  • Panoramic views of mountains and lower valleys
  • Mixed climbing of Ice, Snow and Rock
  • Good entree for beginning mountaineers

Climbing Yalung Ri Peak is a non-technical mountain located in Rolwaling Valley, eastern part of Nepal. At an altitude of 5630m, Yalung Ri Peak involves a mixed climb of rock, ice and snow. An ideal peak for beginners, Yalung Ri is a suitable peak for people with no previous climbing experience. The peak serves as a good entry point for beginner climbers.

Yalung Ri climbing is not walking and requires the use of crampons, rope work and ice-axes. The climb to Yalung Ri starts from the base camp on rocky terrain and gradually progresses through the icy glacier section, Crampon Point. From here, the climb to the summit is moderate non-technical snow and rock climbing that poses some technical challenges. The path to the summit follows through a ridge. With a mixed climb of snow, ice and rock, the steepness stretches up to 40 degrees at some angles.

Although Yalung Ri’s height is relatively low compared to other trekking peaks in Nepal, Yalung Ri demands respect and requires proper trekking gears. We have designed a proper itinerary keeping in mind every important aspect to maximize the success ratio. We will cover the 700m climb from base camp to the summit in one day.

For Yalung Ri we begin our trip with a trek to Rolwaling valley keeping enough rest and acclimatization. Following the Rolwaling Khola, we pass by Kyalje, Dhongang, Beding and Naa. We have kept two nights at Beding and Naa for better acclimatization purpose. From Na Gaon, 4 hrs of the steep climb will take us to the base camp of Yalung Ri at 4900m. As usual, the climb to the summit will begin early morning before dawn and the total duration of the climb will be 6-8 hrs on average depending on your performance.

Yalung Ri summit provides a panoramic view of Rolwaling Himal and wide valley of lowland. The view from the summit is simply breathtaking. One would find it hard to believe that you are only at 5630 meters above sea level. we take great pride in being able to offer guided climbs to Yalung Ri with the best service possible.

Essential Information

Difficulty

Grading: 5-6 (Challenging)

Yalung Ri is graded as Alpine PD, which suggests it to be a challenging climb with a very little technical climb and less objective hazards. Majority of the climb involves walking in a glacier at a relatively fair degree of steepness with the use of crampons and ice axe. The final section of the climb involves an ascent following a ridge at 4o degree angle with the use of a short rope system or ascender/jumar on a fixed rope system depending on the group size.

Physically strenuous, involving daily trekking of approximately 6–8 hours. No previous trekking experience is required but you should be moderately fit and must enjoy walking and adaptable to high altitude conditions.

Prerequisite

To partake in Yalung Ri peak climb, an excellent physical level is required as this trip involves a longer duration of trek/climb. Previous experience of high altitude treks is not mandatory to take part in this trip. While the previous experience of trek/climb is beneficial, our carefully planned itinerary allows people without previous experience to join as well. Proper rest and acclimatization days have been kept in the itinerary. You should also be both mentally and physically prepared for this trip. A fierce determination, burning desire and teamwork is required. We have allowed ample time for acclimatization on our itinerary and there will also be a climbing course at the base camp where your guide will teach you the proper way to use the equipment.

Weather

The best seasons to climb Yalung Ri Peak are autumn (October to late November) and spring (April to May). The temperature will drop significantly as you climb higher each day. Nights are cool (between 5C to -5C) and days are sunny and warm (between 10C to 20C). Mornings are usually clear, clouds build in the afternoon and disappear at night. Trekking and climbing is not recommended during monsoons and winters as visibility is poor and limited while higher reaches and higher passes may be covered with snow.

April, May, October and November are the favorite months.

Insurance

Getting travel insurance is mandatory and highly recommended before embarking on any adventure travel in Nepal. We advise all our clients to obtain travel insurance that covers emergency helicopter evacuation that may be required due to AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) or any other reason at high altitudes where other means of transport are not available. It is advisable to carefully review the insurance and its coverages before making a final decision. Take your proof of insurance with you on holiday and leave a copy with your relative. You should ensure that your insurance provides an adequate level of protection and covers you for the activities involved.
