Ladakh offers some of the most spectacular, high-altitude peak climbing in the Himalayas, primarily in the 6,000-meter category. Because Ladakh is a rain-shadow region, the climbing season extends from Jun to September, avoiding the monsoon rains found in other parts of India and Nepal.
Top Peak Climbing OptionsStok Kangri (6,153m): The most famous peak in the region. It involves glacier travel and steep scree, offering breathtaking views of the Zanskar and Karakoram ranges. Mentok Kangri Range (approx. 6,250m): Located near the stunning Tso Moriri lake, this is an ideal non-technical 6,000-meter climb that serves as a great introduction to Himalayan mountaineering. Kang Yatse (6,400m): Located at the end of the popular Markha Valley, it consists of two peaks. Kang Yatse II (approx. 6,200m) is a trekking peak, whereas the main peak requires advanced mountaineering skills. Kyagar Ri (6,100m): Another fantastic introductory 6,000-meter summit frequently used for acclimatization before tackling higher, more technical peaks. Essential Permits and RegulationsForeign climbers and mountaineers must obtain formal climbing permits from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF). The permit process requires a booking fee based on the peak’s height and typically involves a liaison officer from the IMF accompanying your team. Because application processing can take up to six months, it’s highly recommended to book your expedition through local operators well in advance. Preparation and AcclimatizationProper acclimatization is critical to avoid severe altitude sickness. Most Ladakh peak climbing itineraries spend several days trekking at lower altitudes, often beginning in Leh (3,500m) and exploring areas like the Nubra Valley or Rumtse.
