Chulu Far East Peak Climb is one of our classic 6000m peak climbing holidays in Annapurna region, Nepal combined with the famous Annapurna Circuit Trek.
Chulu Far East Peak Climb is one of classic climbing holidays in Nepal, combined with the famous Annapurna Circuit Trek. Out of the three Chulu peaks, Chulu Far East Peak Climbing is straightforward yet fun and does not require previous technical climbing experience. However, the steep terrain and scree slopes during the approach make it a bit challenging. This peak has often been compared to the Island Peak Climb in the Everest region. Chulu Far East Peak allows climbers to witness the breathtaking gifts of nature. The panoramic views of the Himalayan vistas from the summit of Chulu Far East Peak include Annapurna II, III & IV, Gangapurna, Manaslu, Glacier Dome, Pisang Peak, Chulu West Peak, and Dhaulagiri. You get to gaze upon the plains of Tibet to the north over the horizon. The trek passes through tranquil landscapes, lush vegetation, and the traditional villages of the Gurung people in the majestic Annapurna region. We have also added Thorung La Pass in the itinerary, making it a perfect climbing holiday in the Annapurna region of Nepal.
The Chulu Far East Peak Climbing journey begins with a long 8-hour drive to Jagat. From Jagat, the trek begins through the foothills of the Marsyangdi Valley, following the classic Annapurna Circuit Trail. The trail takes you through a gradual uphill climb for multiple days, passing scenic villages. The trek then follows the remote trails, with narrow, ascending uphill climbs, to Yak Kharka and then to the Chulu far east base camp. The Base camp is located at 4,800m. From the base camp, it’s a 1260m ascent to the summit. Our Chulu Far East final summit push will be from the high camp instead of base camp to break up the long climbing journey, maximizing summit chances. From the summit, the view is breathtaking, encompassing several high Himalayan peaks. After summiting Chulu Far East, you descend to the base camp and then proceed to Manang to complete the rest of the journey. You’ll trek across Thorung La Pass at 5,416m and finally conclude the trek at Jomsom.

Chulu Far East Peak Climbing Difficulty
Chulu Far East Peak climbing is considered strenuous due to the longer duration of the trek/climb in a remote and isolated area that goes above (5500m). You need to sleep at an elevation of 5000m+ for multiple days. Climbers are required to have an excellent physical level. On summit days, you will leave camp at around 2 am and will only be back at base camp by late afternoon. This grade trip involves the usage of climbing equipment (Harness, Ice Axe, Crampons, Mountaineering Boots, Ascender). Previous experience is essential, and we also provide a climbing course at base camp before the actual climb, where your guides will teach you the proper way to use the equipment.
Prerequisite
To partake in Chulu far east peak climb, an excellent physical level is required as this trip involves a longer duration of trek/climb. Previous experience of high altitude treks is of great advantage while climbing a 6000m peak. While the previous experience of trek/climb is a requirement, our carefully planned itinerary allows people without previous experience to join as well. Proper rest and acclimatization days with an overnight at high camp have been kept in the itinerary. You should also be both mentally and physically prepared for this trip. A fierce determination, burning desire and teamwork is required. We have allowed ample time for acclimatization and contingency day on our itinerary and there will also be a climbing course at the base camp where your guide will teach you the proper way to use the equipment.
Weather of Chulu Far East Climb
The best seasons for Chulu Far East Climb are Autumn (from October till the end of November) and Spring (April to May). Temperatures will drop considerably as you ascend higher every day. The nights are cold (between 5C to -5C) and the days are sunny and hot (between 10C to 20C). Mornings are usually clear, with clouds building up in the afternoon and disappearing at night. Trekking and climbing during the monsoon seasons and winters are not recommended as the visibility is poor and limited, whilst the upper parts and high passes could be covered with snow.
During the optimal climbing periods, climbers should still be prepared for rapid weather changes, especially at higher altitudes. Strong winds can develop quickly, and sudden snow flurries are not uncommon, even in the generally stable spring and autumn months. Therefore, packing layers of warm, windproof, and waterproof clothing is essential. Furthermore, the intense solar radiation at high altitude necessitates the use of high-factor sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to prevent sunburn and snow blindness. Checking up to date weather forecasts before and during the climb is very important.
Approach
We begin our trip with a well-paced itinerary to Chulu Far East. Our itinerary follows the best route which allows proper acclimatization and rest days. After multiple days of the trek, we reach the base camp. We have kept a day for training and refreshment at the base camp. This allows you to move slowly into the mountains.
Group Size
Our emphasis is always on keeping groups small so that it is easier to coordinate and collaborate with each other. Our group sizes are small and we take up to 12 people in a group. If the group size varies, the minimum number of people required to operate the trip is 1 and the maximum is 12 people.
Safety
Safety is always a priority while travelling. Our itinerary for Chulu Far East Climb has been devised carefully ensuring safety and success. We carry supplementary oxygen system, satellite phone and medical kit on our peak climbing trips be it a group of 1 or 12. Besides, we provide high staff to client ratio on our peak climbing trips.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is an absolute necessity for anyone planning to climb Chulu Far East Peak. Given the high altitude, remote location within the Annapurna region, and the inherent risks associated with mountaineering, a comprehensive policy is crucial. Your insurance should specifically cover emergency medical evacuation, including helicopter rescue, which can be extremely expensive in Nepal’s mountainous terrain. It should also include coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation or interruption, loss or damage to baggage and personal belongings, and personal liability. Ensure the policy explicitly states that it covers mountaineering activities at altitudes exceeding 6,000 meters.
When selecting travel insurance for this climb, carefully review the policy details and exclusions. Verify the maximum coverage amounts for medical and evacuation expenses are adequate. Some policies may have specific requirements or limitations for high-altitude activities, so it’s vital to confirm these details with the insurance provider. It’s also advisable to carry a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact information with you during the trek and ensure your trekking agency is aware of your insurance details for swift assistance in case of an emergency.
What are the permits required for the Chulu Far East Summit Expedition?
Climbing Chulu Far East Peak in Nepal requires certain permits to ensure legal and safe climbing and trekking. These permits are important for protecting the preserve and coordinating mountaineering operations in the area. If hikers want to climb Chulu Far East Peak, they must obtain major permits. In fact, they must have three permits: a peak climbing permit, an Annapurna Conservation Area permit, and a TIMS card.
Peak Climbing Permits
For peaks below 6500m, like the Chulu Far East peak, the permit cost depends on the season in which the trek is planned.
For foreign nationals
- Spring season – $250
- Autumn Season – $125
- Winter Season – $70
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit
The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) promotes sustainable tourism and conservation of the region’s unique plants, animals, and cultural heritage. Implemented in 1992 and managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), the permit also raises revenue for conservation efforts and controls the number of tourists. ACAP offers different categories of permits for trekkers, climbers, and cultural tourists. The funds raised are spent directly on environmental conservation, community development, and the promotion of infrastructure. One needs to understand the categories of permits and fees when planning a trip to the region.
- 3,000 NPR – For Foreigners other than nationals
- 1,000 NPR – For SAARC nationals
Trekkers Information Management System
The Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) is an important resource for tracking trekkers within Nepal’s trekking zones and enhancing their safety. A card is issued, along with information about trekkers (including their destination and emergency contact numbers). In most situations, TIMS is an effective means of ensuring trekker safety and managing overcrowded trekking routes in Nepal.
- $16 – Other Foreign Countries
- $8 – SAARC countries
Thorong La: A challenging but rewarding section
The highest point reached by trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit trek is Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters. However, it is also a challenging part of the Chulu East Peak Climb trekking package. The pass is difficult to climb due to its high altitude, which requires proper acclimatization, and the rugged terrain, which requires proper endurance and stamina. The climb is steep, usually snowy, and the high-altitude winds can be particularly challenging. But successfully crossing Thorong La is a wonderful feat of achievement, giving you deep satisfaction and some of the most breathtaking wide-angle views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
Thorong La Pass not only offers a physical challenge but also the satisfaction of crossing one of the highest passes in Nepal, which brings a different view and cultural experience. The pass connects Manang district with Muktinath, a holy site for Hindus and Buddhists. From Thorong La Pass, trekkers can get panoramic views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Thus, it is a unique experience to combine with climbing Chulu Peak in Nepal.

Climbing the trekking peak in Nepal is no ordinary feat, but without ample information planning a trip becomes quite unclear. Our Chulu Far East Peak Climbing FAQs will provide the various answers that you have been looking for and further guide you through the subsequent stages of planning and preparing for a life-changing expedition. So, let’s get into them.
FAQs of Chulu Far East Peak Climb
From the top of Chulu Far East Peak, climbers are rewarded with spectacular views across the majestic Himalayan landscape. These include the Annapurna range, with Annapurna I-IV, Gangapurna, Manaslu, and Tilicho visible in the distance. From the summit, the trekkers will see beautiful Thorong La Pass and stunning Manang Valley.
While Mera Peak is the higher climb of the two, Chulu East Peak is still considered the tougher. Mera Peak is often seen as a more straightforward climbing adventure, but the Chulu trek is more technical and requires more knowledge of peak climbing and the use of equipment.
Days typically involve several hours of trekking or climbing, depending on the altitude and terrain. Rest periods are incorporated to aid acclimatization. Evenings are usually spent in teahouses or tents, where meals are served, and plans for the next day are discussed.
Risks during Chulu Far East include altitude sickness, falls, injuries from ice and rockfall, and adverse weather conditions. It is important to go with a reputable guiding service and to have good travel insurance. To avoid the risk, you must also hire guides and porters, which will help make navigation easier, and also for security.
A high level of physical fitness is essential. Before the expedition, climbers should engage in regular cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and endurance training. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is highly beneficial. The trekkers must also focus on their mental fitness level by practicing yoga and meditation.
The expedition typically lasts 16 to 20 days, depending on the itinerary and the time required for acclimatization. This timeframe includes trekking to base camp, summit attempts, and the descent. Sometimes, external factors, like weather, trails, etc., might increase the duration of the trek and the Chulu peak climb.
The climb to the Chulu Far East Peak is considered moderately challenging. While it’s one of the more accessible 6,000-meter peaks in Nepal, it still requires a good level of physical fitness and some basic mountaineering skills. Climbers should be prepared for steep sections, icy terrain, and the effects of high altitude.
Acclimatization is crucial. This involves ascending gradually, taking rest days, staying hydrated, and avoiding strenuous activity at high altitudes. Being aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness and communicating with your guide is also essential. Furthermore, hydrating yourself throughout the trek and drinking ginger, lemon, and honey drinks work against altitude sickness.
It’s mandatory and highly recommended to get travel insurance before embarking on any adventurous trips. We advise all our clients to get travel insurance that covers up emergency helicopter evacuation that may be needed in case of the occurrence of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) or any other reasons in high altitudes where there are no other means of transportation available. It is advisable to review carefully the insurance and its coverages before making the final decision.
