Explore Lhasa Tour OverView
The shortest possible tour of Lhasa, the Explore Lhasa Tour is very popular among international travelers. The tour starts and ends in Lhasa, the heart of Tibet, and covers popular landmarks in this beautiful city such as the Dalai Lama’s Potala and Norbuling Palaces, the Tibetan Traditional Hospital, and the Barkhor Bazaar. You will also visit many of the impressive Tibetan monasteries in Lhasa, such as Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery, and Jokhang Temple. They are all wonderful monasteries with their own history and religious relevance. The tour also takes you to the outskirts of Lhasa where you will visit the 15th-century Ganden Monastery and explore the Drayerpa Cave, which is still a meditation retreat for Tibetan monks.
5 Days Itinerary of Explore Lhasa Tour
You will arrive in Lhasa either by direct flight from Nepal or via mainland China. If you decide to fly from Nepal, you can enjoy a scenic one-hour trans-Himalayan flight that will take you over Mount Everest (8,848 meters), Kanchenjunga (8,536 meters) and other Himalayan peaks and glaciers. If you choose to travel to Lhasa via mainland China, you can fly from any major Chinese city or take the world’s highest railway to Lhasa. Upon arrival in Lhasa, our representative will take you from the airport or train station to your designated hotel in Lhasa, approximately an hour’s drive away. You will be advised to get plenty of rest for the rest of the day to reduce altitude sickness. Spend the night in Lhasa.
After breakfast, you will begin your tour of Lhasa. Today is the day to visit the beautiful Potala and Norbuling Palace. Built in the 17th century, the Potala Palace offers amazing views of the entire city and houses the Dalai Lama’s private quarters, numerous magnificent state rooms, and chapels. The Norbuling Palace is the Dalai Lama’s summer palace and is considered the largest man-made garden in Tibet. Next, you will visit the Tibetan Traditional Hospital, which is a center for treatment, training, research, and production of Tibetan medicine. Spend the night in Lhasa.
In the morning, you will visit Ganden Monastery, located on the summit of Wangbar Mountain (3,800 meters) in Lhatse County, 57 kilometers east of Lhasa. It is the oldest and one of the ‘Great Three’ of the six Gelug monasteries in Tibet. Ganden Monastery has extremely delicate and exquisite frescoes and sculptures. It also houses the jeweled armor worn by Emperor Qianlong and gifted to the monastery by Song Khapa, the founder of the Gelug sect. In the afternoon, you will visit Dreyerpa Cave, located in a beautiful valley with stunning views. There are more than 30 caves for lamas who want to meditate in a peaceful environment. In the evening, we return to Lhasa and spend the night.
After breakfast you will visit Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Bazaar. Built in the 14th century, Drepung Monastery is believed to have sheltered around 10,000 monks in the past but has now declined considerably resulting in only a few hundred monks. The history, culture and religious beliefs of the Tibetan people are firmly anchored and concentrated in this amazing monastery. Sera Monastery is a preserved monastery with white-washed walls and golden roofs. Jokhang Temple is another important sacred site that reveals the deep secrets of Tibetan Buddhism. You will further stroll through Barkhor Bazaar (market). With its open-air stalls, shops and crowds of pilgrims, it is the nerve centre of Lhasa. Overnight in Lhasa.
Your tour of the beautiful city of Lhasa ends today. There is nothing left to do but wander the streets of Lhasa, shop for souvenirs, or relax in your hotel room. One of our representatives will transfer you to Lhasa Airport for your onward journey.
