Makalu & Kanchenjunga Region

Located in the Mahalangur Himalayas of eastern Nepal, the Makalu region is an undiscovered gem. Filled with virgin forests, rich wildlife, vast glaciers and majestic mountains, the Makalu region is rarely explored. Only a handful of trekkers and climbing groups reach the region each year. The region is home to the world’s fifth-highest mountain, Makalu, and the Makalu Barun National Park. The national park shelters some of the most endangered wildlife and plant species found in the Himalayas. The lower slopes of the Makalu region are home to villages of indigenous hill tribes – the Sherpas, Rai and Limbu. Since the region receives few visitors, the facilities available are very basic. At higher altitudes, with no human settlements, one has to rely entirely on organized camping trip for adventure throughout the region.

The trekking routes in the Makalu region are off the beaten track. If you want to experience a true wilderness trek, you should head to this region. The Makalu Base Camp trek, which is the most popular trek in the region, takes you through Rai and Sherpa villages, yak herder camps, and the lush forests of the Makalu Barun National Park. The pristine alpine meadows and glaciers of the Barun Valley are a feast for the eyes. The trek ends at Makalu Base Camp, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and Lhotse Shar. The trek offers ample challenges. The trails go through the difficult Sherpani Col, West Col, and the high mountain passes of Amphu Labtsa and Sumba Lumba. The isolated Makalu Region offers a great alternative for those looking for an adventure away from the popular and crowded trails.

The Kanchenjunga region is located in eastern Nepal, near the Nepal-India border. The world’s third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga, looms majestically over this isolated region. Popular trekking routes in the region include the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek, the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek, and the loop of both base camps known as the Kanchenjunga Circuit. Since the trekking route is sparsely populated and there are tea houses along the route, it is recommended to trek in the region with camping equipment and a licensed guide.

Revered by the Buddhist Sherpas and Lepcha who live at the foot of Kanchenjunga, the five peaks of the Kanchenjunga massif are considered the “Five Treasures of Snow”. In the lower hills, you will find villages of the Rai, Limbu, and Gurung communities. They rely on terrace farming, weaving, and sheep herding for their livelihood. The Limbu women of the region are known for their expertise in weaving “Dhaka”, the traditional fabric of Nepal. Similarly; Trekking in this area offers a variety of landscapes – from lush rhododendron and pine forests in the lower mountains to treeless alpine tundra in the upper reaches. The area is also home to a rich wildlife population. Snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan black bears and blue sheep inhabit the dense forests and mountain slopes. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project was established in 1998 to protect the endangered species found in the area.

In conclusion, this remarkable region is a treasure trove for those seeking adventure, exploration, and personal growth. Whether you are an experienced trekker or a novice adventurer, the Makalu and Kanchenjunga region promises to provide an extraordinary trekking experience filled with breathtaking views, unforgettable memories, and the chance to connect with the heart and soul of the Himalayas. Prepare for a journey of a lifetime in one of the most captivating trekking destinations on the planet.
