Langtang Gosaikunda and Helambu Trek – 16 Days

Langtang Gosaikunda and Helambu Trek features a splendid adventure and breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges, including insight into the ethnic Tibetan culture and lifestyle. Starting from just 10 km north of Kathmandu valley, Langtang Gosaikunda and Helambu trek is an ideal trek. If you want to avoid any uncertainties of air travel and logistics. It is the most accessible of all the trekking regions in Nepal. Overall, this trek is considered a moderate grade trek but the alpine lakes of Gosaikunda the Lauribina Pass situated at 4610m offers real challenges to this trek. Witnessing the beauty of the Gosaikunda Lake is another major highlight of this trek.

Our Trek starts at Chisapani after a short drive to Sundarijal from Kathmandu. The journey continues towards the Helambu valley, which is renowned for its monumental heritage and the intact culture of the Hyolmo people. Witness stunning snow-capped mountains like Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak, Dorje Lakpa, and many more. Similarly, The trek will then take a detour to the holy lake of Gosaikunda, a famous Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site. Explore Gosaikunda Lake, a sacred lake worshiped by Hindus and Buddhists.

From here we descend to Thulo Syabru connecting the Langtang Valley Trek trail. We continue the journey towards the alpine Himalayan valley following the inward valley of Langtang region. You can witness the diverse flora and fauna as you enter the Langtang National Park, which is home to the endangered red pandas, including numerous animals and birds. Enjoy tasting the local yak cheese and witness the icy glaciers on the peripheral region at Kyanjin Gompa. Confront the panoramic view of the glorious mountains from Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri.

Day 01 :

Arrive in Kathmandu airport and transfer to hotel

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal. After completing visa formalities and collecting your luggage at the airport, please exit the arrival hall. Your tour leader will be waiting for you just outside the arrival hall and will take you to hotel in Kathmandu. Please look for a placard with your name on it at the exit of the arrival hall. Then depending on the time, you will have time to walk around the hotel and familiarize yourself near hotel.

Day 02 :

Exploration of Kathmandu and trek preparation

Today is a full-day Kathmandu tour; in which you will explore various UNESCO sites in Kathmandu. We will start our tour with a visit to Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal. We will witness the Hindu cremation ceremony at Aryaghat, located on the banks of the Bagmati River. And we will visit Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal. We can see the rich Tibetan culture at Boudhanath. Similarly, we will end the day’s tour by visiting Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal residence of Nepal.

Day 03 :

Drive to Sundarijal from Kathmandu and trek to Chisapani

Sundarijal is located on the northern edge of Kathmandu. To reach Sundarijal we will travel about an hour by car from central Kathmandu. And from Sundarijal, we will follow the stone steps to reach Mulkharka which is a beautiful Tamang village. Apart from this, we will also walk along the dam that supplies water to Kathmandu and enter the Shivpuri National Park. From there we will follow the path that descends to Chisapani (Cold Water) (2300 meters). And we will stay night in here.

Day 04 :

Trek to Kutumsang from Sundarijal

Today we will trek from Chisapani after breakfast to Kutumsang through the forest area. This will be a long trek of seven hours. We will follow the path downhill through grasslands and fields, enjoying the panoramic views of the Langtang Mountains. We will go through Pati Bhanjyang to Gul Bhanjyang and then to another Bhanjyang. After descending from Bhanjyang, we will reach Kutumsang where we will spend the night.

Day 05 :

Trek to Thadepati from Kutumsang

After breakfast, we will leave Kutumsang for our Gantabbya and follow the steep ascent route through the pine and rhododendron forests. We will not find any permanent settlements on this route. Walking through the forest, we will reach Yurin Danda from where we will have panoramic views of several surrounding mountains. Continuing on, we will reach Thadepati where we will spend the night.

Day 06 :

Trek to Phedi from Thadepati

After breakfast, we will cross the forests trail, and you’ll steep through a wide valley on a small river path towards Phedi. It takes about six hours to reach Phedi from Thadepati.

Day 07 :

Cross Lauribina pass and trek to Gosaikunda Lake

This is the most exciting and longest hiking day of the entire trip. We will start our journey today from the foothills after an early breakfast for the challenging Lauribina La Pass (4,610m), the highest elevation of our trek. And after the pass, we will head towards the sacred destination of Gosaikunda, trekking through jagged countryside paths and crossing several other small glacial lakes to reach Gosaikunda Lake. One of the most spectacular views of this trekking will be seen from the Lauribina La Pass. See the magnificent view of the mountains including the majestic Manaslu Peak, Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung Peaks. Capturing these beautiful moments in photos, we will then descend steeply to the Gosaikunda Lake settlement, where we will spend the night.

Day 08 :

Trek to Thulo Syabru from Gosaikunda Lakes

After breakfast, we will leave Gosaikunda and trek towards Chandanbari. Where we will stop for lunch, which is also famous for the ancient monastery called Chandanbari Shin Gompa, which is one of the major attractions of this trek. This place is also famous for its cheese factory and also provides a glimpse into the local culture and lifestyle of the people of Rasuwa district. Then we will take another new route through the dense forests, rhododendron forest and descend to the Thulosyabru where we will stay for the night. On the way, if we are lucky, we may see red pandas, playful monkeys and bears etc.

Day 09 :

Trek to Lama Hotel from Thulo Syabru

Today we descend from the big Syabru and follow the forest path for the first part of the trek, passing through the Bhote Koshi and the Langtang River. The trek gradually ascends through landslide areas to the bamboo. Then, we descend gently along the banks of the Langtang River to the bamboo (1960m) and Rimche (2400m). On the way, if we are lucky, we may see red pandas, playful monkeys and bears.

Day 10 :

Trek to Langtang Village from Lama Hotel

After breakfast, we continue our climb with occasional glimpses of Langtang Lirung through the trees. At Ghore Tabela (3000m), the trail emerges from the forest. Here, we get to see white monkeys frolicking and hear the sweet chirping of the delightful local birds. The trail gradually climbs and the valley widens, passing some makeshift settlements used by herders who bring their cattle to graze on the high pastures during the summer months. We can visit a monastery shortly before arriving at Langtang village, the headquarters of Langtang National Park. The houses in Langtang and its neighboring villages are of the Tibetan style with flat roofs, where we stay overnight.

Day 11 :

Trek to Kyanjin Gompa from Langtang Village

Today's route gradually winds through rich yak pastures and the interesting traditional villages of Muna to Xingdun. We cross a wooden cantilever bridge and climb a moraine into a wide valley. Finally, climbing the mountain passes, we reach Kyagjing Gompa. There is a small monastery and a government-run cheese factory. Below, we can sample some fresh cheese. And spend the night at our lodge.

Day 12 :

Exploration Day in Kyanjin Gompa

Our day here is a relaxing one but that is all we can say, as we will explore interesting places like monasteries, cheese factories etc. We will climb Tserko Ri located at 5,000 meters/16,400 feet from where the best views of the snow-capped mountains spread out in a wonderful display right before your eyes. We can walk up the moraine to see the magnificent mountain ranges and rolling glaciers. And today we will spend the night at our lodge.

Day 13 :

Trek to Lama Hotel from Kyanjin Gompa

From Kyanjin we return to Lama Hotel. As we retrace our steps, we follow the Langtang River path to Langtang Village and Ghora Tabela. We take a short walk for lunch and then descend the steep slope to Lama Hotel to check out for the night.

Day 14 :

Trek to Syabrubesi from Lama Hotel

Today is the last day of our trek. You will walk through terraced fields and green hills to reach Syabrubensi. On the way, enjoy the breathtaking views of the mighty mountains, Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal. Walking through the steep forests of oak and hemlock, you will gradually descend towards rhododendron forests and pastures to reach the Phoprang Danda. Climbing gently, you will pass a few Buddhist monasteries and reach the village of Syabrubensi. Where you will stay overnight in the village of Syabrubensi.

Day 15 :

Drive back to Kathmandu from Syabrubesi

The journey back to Kathmandu is an easy eight-hour cruise through scenic highways and distinctive countryside. We check into our hotel and the rest of the day will be free to relax and reflect on the wonderful.

Day 16 :

International departures, or join optional activities

After breakfast, on our last day in Kathmandu, our vehicle and escorts will be ready to take you to the international airport three hours before your scheduled flight. It has been a great honor to meet you in the glorious Nepal Himalayas, and we pray for your safe journey home. We will remember the wonderful times we spent together. Have a nice trip!!! ACCOMMODATION

We will stay in Kathmandu at Hotel Vajra or similar category, which is a standard tea house/lodge during the trek, and this is all included in the cost of the trip. However; during the trek, your accommodation will be in simple teahouses/lodges with basic and shared facilities.

Most teahouses/lodges in the Langtang region have squat toilets: most bathrooms are usually shared but we will arrange for you and your group to stay in local lodges on a daily basis. Please note that some of them are very basic and a sense of adventure is required.

In Kathmandu, your accommodation will be on a twin-shared basis and if you wish to have a single room, upon request you will need to pay a single supplement as mentioned in the trip cost. However, please note that there are less teahouses along the trekking route that do not allow single room accommodation. Paying a supplement guarantees a room in Kathmandu, but this may not always be possible in trekking areas. It’s generally impossible to arrange private rooms. This is the case even if you’re willing to pay extra since the teahouses owners will not give out a private room if it means someone else goes without a room.

MEALS ON THE TREK

During the trek, we will serve typical Nepali food, various ethnic dishes as well as all kinds of international dishes (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, and so on, Indian cuisine) from pizza and chips to apple pie. And breakfast includes bread, eggs, pancakes, muesli, granola, konflux, porridge as well as tea, coffee and hot milk with fresh fruits. Similarly, hot lunch will be served on the way to our next destination. Upon reaching the destination, meals and breakfast will be served at the teahouse/lodge where we will spend the night. However, in Kathmandu, we will only provide breakfast. Because you can taste the food you like, as there are high-quality delicious foods from different countries available. Therefore, you will have to arrange your own lunch and dinner during your stay in Kathmandu.

DRINKING WATER

We provide boiled water for drinking purposes in all our teahouses/lodges or camping treks. We strictly discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles such as mineral water on all our treks. Therefore, it is highly recommended to carry a hot water bottle. And you can ask your staff to fill the bottle with water.

How Hard is it to trek to Langtang Gosaikunda?

Duration for treks of this grade stretches up to three weeks. Trails generally go above 4000 meters and on a daily basis, you can expect to be walking for about 5 –7 hours. Perfect setting of introduction to moderate & challenging trekking in Nepal. Activity level/physical rating is slightly harder than leisure and involves occasional difficult days. Expect ups and downs as well for there will be hills to climb as well.

What is the best time to trek to Langtang Gosaikunda?

The best time to trek Langtang Gosaikunda is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) months when the weather is favorable and suitable for climbing at high altitudes. These seasons offer crystal-clear mountain views with clear skies. The trek can also be done in February and early September but the trek is best done during the above months. Langtang Gosaikunda trek is a teahouse/Lodge trek. Unlike the peak climb, you will not be sleeping in tents but at teahouses or homestay.
