Manaslu and Tsum Valley

Manaslu Region is the land of Beyul (sacred Buddhist valleys) and ‘spirit mountains’. One of the least visited trekking areas in Nepal, the Manaslu region was opened to tourists only in 1992. The region is home to the world’s eighth highest mountain, Manaslu, and the Manaslu Conservation Area. To protect the fragile ecosystem and culture of the indigenous communities in the region, the government has been controlling the number of tourists entering the region by charging high permit fees.

Trekking in the Manaslu region can be difficult but rewarding. Trekking is not as convenient as in the Everest and Annapurna regions. But the beauty of the landscape and rich cultural experiences compensate for the lack of infrastructure. Most treks start from Machha Khola or Barpak in Gorkha district, Gorkha holds an important place in Nepal’s history as it is the birthplace of the Shah kings who unified and ruled Nepal for over two hundred years. These treks traverse the rugged Gandaki River valley and settlements of nomadic people. Trekking in this region offers a diverse range of landscapes and cultures. The lower hills and valley villages are populated by Chettri, Brahmin and Gurung communities, while the higher elevations are inhabited by nomadic tribes of Tibetan origin.

Trekking in this valley showcases the rich Tibetan heritage of the nomadic communities. Located in the Trans-Himalayan region, Tsum Valley is considered a ‘Beyul’, a sacred valley blessed by Buddhist Guru Padmasambhava. Untouched by modern civilization, the people of Tsum Valley still follow the ancient traditions and customs of their ancestors. Tsum Valley treks are some of the popular treks in the Manaslu region. Tsum Valley treks offer a unique experience in Nepal, combining stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage and remote Buddhist monasteries. Trekking in this hidden valley is an off-the-beaten-path journey that promises peace and adventure. With its stunning landscapes, welcoming communities, and unique cultural experiences, trekking in the Manaslu region is sure to leave you with lasting memories and a profound appreciation for the beauty and diversity of Nepal.
