Wear suitable footwear: Use sturdy trekking boots with good grip to reduce the risk of slipping on rocky or muddy trails.
Carry essential supplies: Bring drinking water, snacks, warm clothing, a first-aid kit, a headlamp, and an offline map.
Stay on the marked trail: Avoid shortcuts and do not trek alone through unfamiliar or remote sections.
Protect yourself from the sun: UV exposure is stronger at high altitude, so use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
Recognizing altitude sickness
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, trekkers should be alert to altitude sickness above 2,500 metres.
Symptoms:
1. Headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue
2. Symptoms persist or worsen
3. Confusion, difficulty walking straight, or breathlessness at rest
What to do:
1. Stop ascending, rest, and monitor symptoms.
2. Descend to a lower altitude with assistance and seek medical advice.
3. Treat as an emergency; descend immediately and arrange urgent medical assistance.
Never continue ascending while experiencing altitude sickness symptoms.
When is the best time for the Hidden Lake trek?
Spring and autumn are considered the best seasons to visit Nepal’s ‘Hidden Lake.’ Spring lasts from March to May; during this time, rhododendrons bloom, and the weather remains stable. Similarly, during the autumn season—spanning September to November—the skies are clear, offering unobstructed, breathtaking views of the mountains.
While it is possible to visit during winter, the extreme cold and unpredictable weather make other times of the year more suitable for the trip. The monsoon season brings rain, resulting in slippery trails and poor visibility; therefore, this period may not be ideal for visiting ‘Hidden Lake.’
Spring Season (March to May)
Spring is the best time of the year to experience ‘Hidden Lake’. Clear skies and minimal rainfall offer breathtaking views of the mountains. Embarking on this unique trek is a special achievement for hikers; the captivating sight of the beautiful ‘Hidden Lake’ makes the entire journey truly memorable.
Autumn Season (September to November)
Autumn (September to November) is another ideal time to enjoy ‘Hidden Lake’. With negligible or no rainfall during this season, hikers can fully appreciate the stunning mountain scenery. The crisp, pleasant autumn weather uplifts the spirit and helps one forget the fatigue of long, strenuous walks.
Summer Season (June to August)
The weather is warm during the summer season. Despite the heat, unexpected yet refreshing rain showers enrich the high-altitude experience. The lush greenery in the ‘Hidden Lake’ valley is always enchanting. Although hikers often hesitate to travel during this season due to the heat, the natural scenery remains incredibly attractive.
Winter Season (December to February)
Winter weather is cold and dry, though unexpected rain can occur at times. Consequently, trekking during this period can be somewhat more challenging compared to other seasons. Extreme cold makes the journey more difficult. Since trekking routes can be blocked by snowfall, the trek is undertaken under the leadership of an experienced trekking guide.

No. Hidden Lake is a different destination from the regular Annapurna Base Camp trek. Some Hidden Lake itineraries connect to Annapurna South Base Camp, but the two destinations should not be confused.
The duration depends on the itinerary. Published itineraries range from approximately 5–7 days for shorter versions to 11–14 days for longer trips that include travel and additional destinations. Confirm the exact duration against your planned route.
Many itineraries begin with travel from Pokhara to Ghandruk, followed by trekking through places such as Tadapani and Dobato toward Hidden Lake. The exact starting point and route depend on the itinerary.
The trek is generally considered moderate to challenging, depending on the itinerary and the trekker’s experience. Trekkers should expect steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, long walking days, and high-altitude conditions. The remote upper sections may be difficult to navigate.
Walking time varies by itinerary and terrain. Some itineraries involve approximately 3–7 hours of walking per day, while longer or more demanding sections can take longer. The guide should explain the expected walking time for each day during the briefing.
Previous trekking experience is helpful, especially for the remote and high-altitude sections. Trekkers should have good general fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven terrain. Less-experienced trekkers may need a slower itinerary and additional preparation.
Hidden Lake is reported at approximately 4,250–4,370 metres above sea level. The exact elevation used in the itinerary should be confirmed before departure.
Yes. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of age or physical fitness. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and loss of appetite.
Guide’s advice:
- Walk slowly and maintain a steady pace.
- Drink fluids regularly.
- Follow the planned acclimatization schedule.
- Report symptoms to the guide immediately.
- Never continue ascending when serious altitude sickness is suspected.
Severe symptoms require immediate descent and urgent medical assistance.
Spring and autumn are generally the best seasons.
Spring (March–May): Pleasant trekking conditions, mountain views, and blooming rhododendron forests.
Autumn (September–November): Often clear skies and good mountain visibility.
Winter (December–February): Cold conditions and possible heavy snowfall at higher elevations.
Monsoon (June–August): Rain, slippery trails, clouds, and possible landslides can make trekking more difficult.
Always check current weather and trail conditions before departure.
Weather changes with altitude and season. Lower villages may be relatively warm, while higher areas can be cold, windy, and exposed to sudden weather changes. Snowfall may affect access to the lake.
Trekkers should carry suitable warm clothing and rain protection.
The Hidden Lake route is in the Annapurna Conservation Area. The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is required. Other applicable trekking registration or permit requirements should be checked with the relevant authorities before departure.
A guide is strongly recommended, particularly for the remote upper trail. Some sections above Dobato are poorly marked, and route-finding can become difficult in cloud, fog, or snow. A guide familiar with recent trail conditions helps with navigation, safety, and itinerary management.
Independent navigation of the remote upper sections is not advisable without reliable local route knowledge. Trail conditions can change, and digital maps may not accurately reflect the route. Trekkers should confirm current regulations and follow local guidance.
- Accommodation depends on the itinerary and location.
- Lower villages: Guesthouses and teahouses.
- Remote upper sections: Basic lodges or tented camps may be necessary, depending on the route.
- Camping sections: Some itineraries require camping equipment and a support team.
Do not promise lodge accommodation at every stop without confirming the current arrangements.
Food availability depends on the accommodation and the remoteness of each stop. Common trekking meals in Nepal may include dal bhat, rice, noodles, soup, potatoes, eggs, bread, and tea.
In remote areas, the menu may be limited, so trekkers should be prepared for simple meals.
Water availability varies along the route. Trekkers should carry sufficient water and use a suitable purification method, such as a filter or water-treatment tablets, when needed. Do not assume that untreated stream or lake water is safe to drink.
Trekkers should be comfortable walking for several hours each day, climbing uphill, descending steep paths, and walking on uneven ground.
Before the trek, useful preparation includes:
- Regular walking and hiking.
- Stair climbing.
- Cardiovascular exercise.
- Leg-strengthening exercises.
- Practice walking with a daypack.
The trek can be undertaken with appropriate preparation, experienced guiding, suitable equipment, and careful monitoring of weather and health. However, remote mountain trekking always carries risks, including altitude sickness, falls, sudden weather changes, and difficult trail conditions.
As the main guide, you should assess the trekker’s condition, stop further ascent if altitude sickness is suspected, and arrange appropriate medical help or descent when necessary. Severe breathing difficulties, confusion, difficulty walking straight, or reduced consciousness are emergencies.
Do not leave an ill trekker alone or allow the group to continue without an appropriate safety plan.
Travel insurance that specifically covers high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation is strongly recommended. Trekkers should check the altitude limit, exclusions, and evacuation provisions in their policy before departure.
This depends on their fitness, health, trekking experience, and ability to adapt to altitude. Age alone does not determine suitability. A realistic itinerary, appropriate preparation, and individual assessment are important.
