Join us on a beautiful Himalayan adventure in Nepal, Khopra Ridge and Khayar Lake Trek.
The Khopra Ridge and Khayer Lake Trek is a beautiful off-the-beaten-path trekking adventure in the Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek combines traditional mountain villages, beautiful rhododendron forests, peaceful alpine pastures, spectacular Himalayan viewpoints, and the sacred high-altitude Khayer Lake. Starting from Pokhara, the journey follows the scenic route through Nayapul, Birethanti, and Ghandruk before gradually ascending towards Tadapani and Muldai Viewpoint. Along the way, trekkers experience the traditional lifestyle, culture, and hospitality of the Gurung and Magar communities while enjoying magnificent views of the surrounding Himalayan mountains.
The adventure begins with a drive from Pokhara (827 m / 2,713 ft) to Nayapul (1,070 m / 3,510 ft), followed by a trek through Birethanti (1,025 m / 3,363 ft) towards the beautiful Gurung village of Ghandruk (1,940 m / 6,365 ft). Ghandruk is one of the most popular traditional villages in the Annapurna region, well known for its stone houses, traditional Gurung culture, local museums, and impressive mountain scenery. From Ghandruk, the trail gradually climbs through beautiful forests of oak and rhododendron to Tadapani (2,630 m / 8,628 ft), offering spectacular views of Annapurna South (7,219 m / 23,684 ft), Hiunchuli (6,441 m / 21,132 ft), Machhapuchhre (6,993 m / 22,943 ft), and Annapurna I (8,091 m / 26,545 ft).
From Tadapani, the trail continues towards Dobato and Muldai Viewpoint (3,637 m / 11,932 ft), one of the most rewarding panoramic viewpoints in the Annapurna region. The early-morning sunrise from Muldai offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain ranges, including Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m / 26,795 ft), Annapurna I (8,091 m / 26,545 ft), Annapurna South (7,219 m / 23,684 ft), Nilgiri (6,839 m / 22,438 ft), and Machhapuchhre (6,993 m / 22,943 ft). After enjoying the mountain scenery, the journey continues through peaceful alpine forests and open grazing pastures towards Bayeli Kharka and Chhistibung (approximately 3,000–3,450 m / 9,843–11,319 ft), before reaching the spectacular Khopra Ridge, also known as Khopra Danda (3,660 m / 12,008 ft).
Khopra Ridge is one of the major highlights of this trek, offering an extraordinary mountain panorama from its open grassy ridgeline. The ridge overlooks the deep Kali Gandaki Valley and provides magnificent views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and surrounding Himalayan peaks. Compared with the busier Annapurna trekking routes, Khopra offers a quieter mountain experience, beautiful natural surroundings, and opportunities to experience community-managed mountain lodges. From Khopra Ridge, trekkers can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the high mountains while exploring the unique landscapes of the Annapurna region.
One of the most memorable parts of the adventure is the excursion to Khayer Lake (approximately 4,500–4,660 m / 14,764–15,289 ft), a beautiful sacred alpine lake situated high beneath the southern slopes of Annapurna. The lake holds religious and cultural significance for local communities and Hindu pilgrims, particularly during the Janai Purnima festival. The journey to Khayer Lake passes through rugged mountain terrain, rocky landscapes, and high-altitude alpine surroundings, offering spectacular views of Annapurna South and nearby Himalayan peaks. After visiting the sacred lake, trekkers return to Khopra Ridge for an overnight stay.
After exploring Khayer Lake, the trek descends from Khopra Ridge towards Swanta Village (approximately 2,210 m / 7,250 ft), a traditional Magar settlement surrounded by terraced farmland, forests, and beautiful mountain scenery. From Swanta, the trail continues through Chitre before climbing towards Ghorepani (2,860 m / 9,383 ft), another popular mountain village in the Annapurna region. Ghorepani provides a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional mountain hospitality and enjoy the surrounding Himalayan scenery.
The final highlight of the trek is an early-morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210 m / 10,531 ft), one of Nepal’s most famous sunrise viewpoints. From the viewpoint, trekkers can enjoy a spectacular sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Machhapuchhre (6,993 m), and Nilgiri (6,839 m). After enjoying the sunrise and taking in the final mountain views, the trail descends through Ulleri and Tikhedhunga towards Hile (approximately 1,430 m / 4,692 ft), where a private vehicle takes you back to Pokhara.
Overall, the Khopra Ridge and Khayer Lake Trek is an excellent combination of Himalayan mountain scenery, traditional Gurung and Magar culture, peaceful forest trails, sacred alpine landscapes, and famous sunrise viewpoints. It offers a rewarding alternative to the busier Annapurna trekking routes and allows trekkers to discover some of the region’s most beautiful hidden destinations while experiencing the natural and cultural richness of Nepal.
