The Markha Valley trek is a premium Ladakh expedition that combines the Kang Yatse peak with the Hemis National Park cultural trail. The trek starts from Leh. Hikers trek through the Hemis National Park cultural trail, then climb the 6,250-meter Kang Yatse second peak, separated from the Nimaling Plateau, and then cross the Kongmaru La pass, where; Difficulty and preparation: Hard to difficult. It requires excellent cardiovascular fitness and previous high-altitude trekking experience.
Don’t underestimate the altitude. The first two days in Leh are spent relaxing and exploring the city at a leisurely pace, which is the best season: Mid-June to late September is the ideal window, when the mountain weather is at its most stable. Because the expedition crosses the high-altitude Kongmaru La Pass (17,300 feet) and involves high-altitude mountaineering, it is strongly advised to book with a licensed and reliable company that can secure the necessary Hemis National Park permits and provide certified climbing guides, as this will ensure that you are 100% supported in every way.

Kangyaste Peak Itinerary
Arrive in Leh and check into the hotel. It is best to rest and stay hydrated for the rest of the day to help your body adjust to the high altitude. You will be given complete rest throughout the day to acclimatize yourself to the new environment at an altitude of 11,135 feet. In the evening, hike to Shanti Stupa. This hike offers beautiful views of the Stok Kangri mountain range and the Indus Valley, it also helps your body adjust to the altitude. Spend the night in Leh.

Leh is the ancient capital of Ladakh and has many hilltop forts and palaces to visit including the Royal Palace which overlooks the town. The town is situated on the old Silk Route and still has a trading tradition- it is well worth wandering around the colourful bazaar. Overnight at Leh.

In the morning, you will visit the Leh Durbar, the residence of the royal family built in the 17th century. The Durbar is located on a hilltop and offers a spectacular bird's eye view of the city. After breakfast, you drive to Jingchen and start trek. On leaving Jingchen you The route follows the Yurutse Nala upstream in an increasingly narrow valley- look out for the blue sheep high above on the steep sides of the valley. Before entering Rumbak the valley widens and the snow-topped Stok mountains come into sight. The trail continues upstream, crosses the bridge and then takes the right fork to Yurutse.

Today after breakfast, you will leaving Yurutse the trail passes a beautiful purple band of rock and continues to Ganda la base camp where you take the path west towards the Ganda la. Once at the pass there is a great view of Stok Kangri and the Zanskar range to the west, and from there descend to Shingo.

The trail passes through Chalak and Sara village and on approaching Markha you get the first glimpses of Kang Yatse (6,400m). Even though it is also a small village, Markha has its personal historical Monastery where you will exlpore. Spend the night at Markha in a tent camp.

The route goes up the main valley on the right bank, passes the monastery of Humlung and continues to Hankar. The valley narrows continue along the lower trail, after another 1 km, you will reach the campsite of Thochuntse.

The trek from Thochuntse (4,200 m) to Kang Yatse Base Camp (5,100 m) is a challenging, high-altitude ascent. The route covers about 8-9 km and takes 5 to 6 hours. You will leave the Markha Valley, ascend steep alpine meadows, and cross glassy ridges before reaching the base camp.

You will receive a pre-climb training from your climbing guide on this day. You will get instructions on peak climbing techniques. You will also be taught how to use the climbing gears like ice axe, crampons, harness and ascender properly. You learn how to use ropes while you move up and down.

Today is the most exciting as well as challenging day for you. Early in the morning, you start your summit to the Kang Yatse. The moment you reach the top, you will feel a sense of pride and great achievement. From the top, The Kang Yatse summit offers staggering 360-degree panoramic views of the distant Karakoram range and the Zanskar mountains. From where many other snow-clad peaks in the mountain range. After your successful summit, you will trace your steps back to base camp.

An extra day scheduled for any weather. Climbing a 6000m peak involves multiple factors, such as weather and health conditions, which can cause a delay or interruption to your itinerary. In such a case, your schedule might be affected. This contingency day will help you ensure that your schedule goes smoothly without interruption.

From base camp and Nimaling, Kongmaru La is very clearly visible to the east. Cross the stream near the campsite and proceed towards the pass. There is a clear trail that climbs up steeply to the pass. From Nimaling it takes around 2 hours to reach the pass. Kongmaru La is a great spot to rest after the grueling trek up. On a clear day, you get great views of the Indus valley and Ladakh ranges from here. But most people descend all the way down to Shang Sumdo the same day, but that makes for a rather unpleasant last day. If time is not a constraint, it is highly recommended to stop at Chokdo for the night.

Today is a very short and easy day of trekking to the road-facing Shang Sumdo. It is a flat walk along the river bank and will take you less than two hours. From Shang Sumdo, a car will be waiting for you to take you to Leh, on the way to Leh you can visit Hemis Monastery.

How difficult is the Kangyaste during the trek/climb?
Longer treks reaching up to an elevation of 6250m where some of the famous mountaineering Base Camps are located and you need to sleep at an elevation of 5000m for a few days. Physically strenuous, involving daily trekking of approximately 6–8 hours. No previous trekking experience is required but you should be moderately fit and must enjoy walking and adaptable to high altitude conditions.
Do I need previous experience to do Kangyaste trek/climb?
To partake in Kangyaste peak climb, an excellent physical level is required as this trip involves a longer duration of trek/climb. Previous experience of high altitude treks is not mandatory to take part in this trip. While the previous experience of trek/climb is a requirement, our carefully planned itinerary allows people without previous experience to join as well.
Proper rest and acclimatization days have been kept in the itinerary. You should also be both mentally and physically prepared for this trip. A fierce determination, burning desire and teamwork is required. We have allowed ample time for acclimatization on our itinerary and there will also be a climbing course at the base camp where your guide will teach you the proper way to use the equipment.
What is the weather like for Kangyaste trek/climb?
In general, Ladakh weather is pleasant in summer, with warm to very hot sunny days (temperatures can reach 35C/95F or more), and cool to cold nights depending on altitude (it can be below freezing at the highest camps in late August). However, there is always a chance of rain and snow at higher altitudes. Please note, the sun is very strong at these altitudes and it can be very hot during the day. For the Kangyaste Peak (Expedition) climb, we will depart before dawn and the day can be very cold and there may be snow.
Ladakh, although technically part of the Tibetan Plateau and classified as a high-altitude desert, occasionally experiences the influence of the Indian monsoon. Although departures are usually timed to coincide with good weather, the weather in any mountainous region is never completely predictable and you should be prepared and equipped to deal with any variations in weather outside of the conditions described above.

Room Arrangement: are on a twin-sharing basis, which Hotel Omasila in Leh with breakfast.
Your accommodation during the trek/climb will be fully tent camping. A tent with foam mattress will be provided for every 2 travelers. There will also be a kitchen tent, dining tent, toilet tent, table, chairs. We will have mules to load all this equipment.
Meals during the Trek/climb
All meals are included throughout the trek/climb. We will provide three meals a day during the trek/climb. Our kitchen team will serve freshly prepared meals during the trek. We consider hearty and delicious food to be a key ingredient for the overall success of our trek.
Since this is a full camping trek/climb, meals are prepared by the trekking cook and usually include warm, nutritious options such as soup, rice, pasta and vegetable curries. Finally, there will be also farewell dinner in Leh.
