Mentok Kangri Expedition

Arrive in Leh and check into the hotel. It is best to rest and stay hydrated for the rest of the day to help your body adjust to the high altitude. You will be given complete rest throughout the day to acclimatize yourself to the new environment at an altitude of 11,135 feet. In the evening, hike to Shanti Stupa. This hike offers beautiful views of the Stok Kangri mountain range and the Indus Valley, it also helps your body adjust to the altitude. Spend the night in Leh.

After your first night in Leh, you will be well-informed about the briefing and equipment check time upon arrival. Moreever, you will be briefed by your trek and climb guide about your trekking program. If you have fallen short of any trek and climb equipment that you may need, this time can be used to arrange for it.

There is a beautiful lake called Pangong Tso (lake) about 160 km from Leh. It takes about 4 hours to reach the lake from Leh. It is unique, believe me, the first sight of this gem will be enough to take your breath away, no exaggeration. However, you should start early to get enough light by the time you reach your destination. Driving on the Leh-Manali highway, you will see a road fenced on both sides by the Stok Range and the Ladakh Range (which is an extension of the Karakoram Range) and after the highway you will enter the Pangong Lake Road, a part of which is a bit difficult to see. Where the first one stops - so between Leh and Pangong is a high mountain pass called Chang La, it is claimed to be the second highest motorable road in the world. There was a lot of liveliness people were taking pictures in the most cheerful way possible.

If you’re not absolutely dead tired, another two to three hours of easy walking on almost flat motorable road along the right or western edge of the lake will lead you to a large chorten beside lush pasture land which marks the campsite of Riyul. You can have lunch here.

Then, follow the jeep road which runs on the right of the pasture moving south. The road traverses soft, sandy soil which makes the first few hours difficult walking. Some 4x4 have made tracks moving south-east. Do not follow this. Carry on south until you reach the fields of Nuruchan (4350 metres). If you are walking from Ponganagu you may want to camp here. The campsite is further south from the village. The track follows the river upstream, curving to the right.

Cross the river at some point in the upper reaches. From where you cross, you will have to take off your shoes and wade through calf-deep water. Climb to the other bank and climb to the plateau ahead. Walk in a southeasterly direction. The path is well defined and climbs very gently to the top of the Horlam Kunga Pass. It shouldn’t take more than three to four hours to reach the top from Nuruchan. Follow the path that descends rapidly to the bottom of the valley in a southeasterly direction from the pass to Rajungkaru. There are several places to camp here. It is also a favorite of nomads. Although their camps are picturesque, watch out for their large, ferocious dogs.

From Rajungkaru, follow the upper reaches of the river until you see a rocky plateau with nomadic camps. You need to climb the plateau, cross the river and head straight south towards Camayuri La 5410 m (17,853 ft). Do not go southwest to the top of the Burma Pass. Instead, follow a well-defined track, staying to the left or east of the mountain. The last hour is difficult as the track is steep and the soil is soft and crumbling. This pass often snows so keep a jacket handy. From the top, follow the track to the left or east of the mountain to the southwest into a vast, grassy valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks. A river flows east-west. Either camp here at Gama Burma for the night or, if you are not comfortable, continue upstream until the track heads southeast up the rocky mountain. You will have to cross a river to get here.

From Gyama Barma it is a steep one hour climb up to Kartse La which is again well over 5000 m. From the top the path runs down a meadow gradually reaching the bottom of the hill at Gyama after another hour or two.. There are two streams here. A small stream running west-east (right-left) and a larger one running southwest-northeast. Camp along the small stream as it is well sheltered. The larger stream runs through a windy plain which would get cold at night.

At Gyama cross the large southwest-northeast stream which will take you to the eastern side of the valley. The pony track which runs below the Mani wall on the left leads south-east up a smaller valley. Climb steadily for a couple of hours, traversing a small grassy plain and then entering a narrow gorge. You will need to criss cross the shallow stream in the gorge at several points. When the gorge opens up again find the path turning left or east over a grassy knoll until you come upon the prayer flags and cairns marking the Yalung Nyau La. From Gyama this would have taken about three hours. You can catch a glimpse of Tso Moriri from the pass. The track moves down steeply towards the east onto a broad, dry plain, eventually turning into a small pleasant green valley traversed by a stream. This area provides excellent campsites.

A relaxing day at Korzok (4,500m) is ideal for mingling and soaking in the magnificent scenery of the Rupshu Valley and Tso Moriri Lake. A well-organized relaxing day in the village includes: Korzok Monastery: Visit the 300-year-old monastery, which is located on a hill overlooking the village and lake. Climb to the roof for sweeping panoramic views of the water and surrounding snow-capped peaks.

Wake up early and witness the magical sunrise over the mountains and the fantastic beauty of Tso Moirir sparkling bright. Because today you will proceed to your Mentok Khangri base camp and pitch camps here. Overnight in tents.

You will receive a pre-climb training from your climbing guide on this day. You will get instructions on peak climbing techniques. You will also be taught how to use the climbing gears like ice axe, crampons, harness and ascender properly. You learn how to use ropes while you move up and down.

Wake up early and start the summit push by 1am. The view from the summit is absolutely awe-inspiring. With a panoramic view of Tso Moirir lake, Parang La, Chamser and Lungser Kangri. Descend down to the base camp and retire for the night.

An extra day scheduled for any weather. Climbing a 6000m peak involves multiple factors, such as weather and health conditions, which can cause a delay or interruption to your itinerary. In such a case, your schedule might be affected. This contingency day will help you ensure that your schedule goes smoothly without interruption.

You will return to Korzok village and rest overnight. Overnight at the guesthouse/camp. Because, your last day of trekking. The rest of the day is free and you can relax in the warm sun and reflect on the emotional experiences you have had while trekking through these vast mountains which have helped you rediscover yourself in ways you least expected. This is your last day in these magnificent mountains. Later celebrate the successful completion of your trek and say goodbye to the climbing guides and staff whom you have come to know very well and will now become good friends. You are certainly happy to end this wonderful journey on a happy note so enjoy tonight.

This morning is another special day, farewell to the team and horsemen. Have breakfast, and say bye to your Ladakhi friends who accompanied you for this trek as your trekking/ climbing staff. The staff will load your kit bags in the vehicle, say bye, and drive for 225km back to Leh. On the way, stop for a look or a bath at the hot spring in Chumathang, one of the famous hot springs among the Ladakhis. The locals believe bathing in such springs to heal the joints and backaches. You will reach Leh by evening, and your guide will drop you off at your hotel.
