Rolwaling and Tashi Lapcha Pass – Himalayan Adventure
The Rolwaling Valley and Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek is one of the most spectacular and challenging trekking adventures in Nepal, connecting the remote Rolwaling Valley in the Dolakha district with the famous Khumbu (Everest) region. This adventurous journey offers an extraordinary combination of traditional Sherpa villages, ancient Buddhist culture, beautiful forests, glacial rivers, high-altitude landscapes, turquoise glacial lakes and magnificent Himalayan mountain views. The trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu (1,350 m) to Chechet (1,230 m), followed by walk through Simigaon (2,000 m) and Dongang (2,790 m) before reaching Beding (3,690 m), the largest traditional Sherpa settlement in the Rolwaling Valley.
From Beding, the trail continues towards Na Gaun (4,180 m), surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery, before reaching the beautiful Tsho Rolpa Lake (4,580 m), one of Nepal’s largest glacial lakes. Throughout the journey, trekkers enjoy breathtaking views of Gaurishankar (7,134 m), Melungtse (7,181 m), Melungtse II (7,023 m), Chekigo (6,257 m), Bamongo (6,400 m), Chobutse (6,685 m), and other magnificent Himalayan peaks.
Continuing beyond Tsho Rolpa, the route enters the remote and rugged alpine wilderness of the Trakarding Glacier, leading towards Tashi Lapcha Base Camp (5,010 m). The most adventurous section of the journey is the crossing of Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755 m), which connects the Rolwaling Valley with the Khumbu region. Along this challenging section, trekkers experience breathtaking views of Pachermo Peak (6,279 m), Chobutse (6,685 m), Dragkar-Go (6,793 m), Kang Nachugo (6,737 m), and other impressive snow-covered Himalayan peaks.
After crossing the pass, the trail descends towards Thengpo and the traditional Sherpa village of Thame (3,820 m), where the spectacular mountain scenery of the Everest region opens up, including magnificent views of Mount Everest (8,849 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), and other peaks of the Khumbu Himalaya. The journey continues through Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), the famous gateway to the Everest region, before reaching Lukla (2,860 m), from where trekkers take a scenic flight back to Kathmandu.
Overall, the Rolwaling Valley and Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek is an unforgettable Himalayan adventure combining remote mountain wilderness, authentic Sherpa culture, spectacular glaciers, high-altitude lakes and an exciting technical mountain pass crossing. It is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a challenging and less-crowded alternative to the traditional Everest trekking routes.
