What is the difficulty of the Annapurna Circuit and the combined ABC trek?
The Annapurna Circuit and the combined ABC Trek difficulty is a moderate to challenging Himalayan journey. The trail throws a bit of everything at stone steps through villages, suspension bridges over roaring rivers, rocky alpine meadows, and the occasional snow or ice near the high passes. Each day clocks in at about 5 to 9 hours of hiking, so need stamina and a steady pace as much as strong legs.
The headline challenge is, of course, the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters, the trek’s highest point. The climb is steep and the air gets noticeably thin, which is then there’s also the Tilicho Lake, a breathtaking but demanding detour. At 4,919 meters, its trail is all loose scree, narrow ridgelines, and heart-thumping exposure. It’s stunning, but it’s no casual stroll, then Annapurna base camp also like Tilicho Lake, where, symptoms like headache, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and breathlessness can sneak up even on the fittest trekkers. That’s why you must have slow ascents, proper hydration, and a few days of cardio and strength training before your trip makes a huge difference.
Altogether, you should consider hiring a local guide and porter. They will help with everything from pacing to route decisions, tailoring the itinerary so you acclimatize well and enjoy the journey instead of stressing over logistics. With smart preparation and the right support, the Annapurna Circuit and the combined ABC becomes less of an intimidating feat and more of an epic adventure.

What permits do I need for the Annapurna and ABC Combined trek, and where how much does each permit cost?
The Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card and the Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) are mandatory trekking permits for the Annapurna Combined Trek. Obtaining the permit before starting the trip is crucial, as trekkers must show it at the trek’s entry points, checkpoints, and exit points. AlpineTrav arranges those permits without any trouble for our clients so that they can travel without any problems along the trek.
ACAP is essential for entering the Annapurna Conservation Area, where trekking occurs. Likewise, TIMS is paramount for allowing authorities to monitor and ensure the safety of trekkers on the trail. ACAP costs approximately US $24 (3,000 NPR) and TIMS Card costs US $17 (2,000 NPR) per person.
Do I need travel insurance for this combined trek?
When you are planning a trip to Nepal, it is a great idea to get your travel insurance that covers theft, loss, medical issues, and emergency rescue operations. A comfortable and satisfying trip is not possible without good travel insurance. Although it is not mandatory to buy insurance for a trip to Nepal, almost all local trekking companies will not accept to run your trip if you do not have travel insurance. But when you buy travel insurance, it is very important to make sure that the policy covers everything you will participate in during your Nepal vacation. The best way to ensure that your travel insurance covers all the activities that you are going to do on the trip is to provide the company with your itinerary.
Furthermore, joining any trek means purchasing your travel insurance against the possible extensive expenses due to medical issues or accidents, including air ambulance, helicopter rescue and evacuation, and treatment costs. Make sure that your insurance is also protected for adventure activities and high altitudes.
If you are hiking or trekking above 13,000 feet, it would be best to choose a policy that covers medical and emergency repatriation, including helicopter evacuation and general medical evacuation for hikers. Also, every traveler should understand that most medical treatments and facilities, such as hospitals or health centers, are paid for at the point of delivery of the patient. Therefore, it is wise for you to choose a policy that pays directly to the doctor or hospital, rather than paying on the spot and claiming later. If you feel sick with altitude, the first thing you should do is inform your leader so that he or she knows what to do. With years of experience, he or she can sense the severity of the situation and respond accordingly, either by bringing you down to a lower altitude or by using a helicopter to rescue you. If for some reason a helicopter is unable to fly, we will use our local staff and contacts to coordinate alternative rescue and treatment procedures, which may mean using a horse or stretcher to transport the sick person down the mountain to the nearest health post or a safe helicopter landing site.
