Annapurna sanctuary trail, through diverse landscape and culture to the south face of Mt. Annapurna

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is one of Nepal’s most beautiful trekking journeys, combining spectacular Himalayan mountain views, traditional villages, rich local culture, and peaceful forest trails. The route takes you through the famous Ghorepani Poon Hill viewpoint, Tadapani, Ghandruk, Chhomrong, Machhapuchhre Base Camp, and before descending through Bamboo, Jhinu Danda, Landruk, Pothana, and Dhampus. The journey ends at Phedi, followed by a drive to Pokhara and Kathmandu.

The trek begins with a drive from Pokhara to Hille. From there, the trail passes through terraced farmlands, traditional settlements, green hills, and beautiful rhododendron forests. Ghorepani and Poon Hill are famous for their spectacular sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Continuing through Tadapani and Ghandruk, you can experience traditional Gurung culture, stone-paved village paths, and warm local hospitality.

As you walk towards Chhomrong and Machhapuchhre Base Camp, the scenery gradually changes from green hills and forests to rugged mountain valleys and alpine landscapes. The trail leads into the beautiful Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural mountain amphitheatre surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. At Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m), you can enjoy breathtaking views of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and other surrounding mountains.

The Annapurna region also has an important place in the history of Himalayan mountaineering. Annapurna I (8,091m) became the first mountain above 8,000 metres to be successfully climbed. On 3 June 1950, French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached its summit, making history in world mountaineering. This achievement brought international attention to the Annapurna region and its magnificent mountains.

After exploring the Annapurna Sanctuary, the return journey follows beautiful forest trails and traditional villages through Bamboo, Jhinu Danda, Landruk, Pothana, and Dhampus before reaching Phedi. At Jhinu Danda, you can enjoy the nearby natural hot springs, while Landruk and Dhampus offer opportunities to experience traditional village life and enjoy beautiful mountain scenery. From Phedi, a private vehicle takes you back to Pokhara, followed by a return journey to Kathmandu.

Overall, the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek via Ghorepani Poon Hill and Dhampus offers a memorable combination of Himalayan scenery, historic mountaineering heritage, traditional village experiences, and diverse natural landscapes. It is an excellent choice for trekkers who want to explore the cultural and natural highlights of the Annapurna region in one rewarding journey.
