There are two ways to trek in Nepal. The traditional type of trekking is camping style. In the early days, this was the only option as there were no facilities available even in the Everest region. The second way is to stay in a lodge where you enjoy the comfort of a guesthouse with room and boarding. Most lodges in Nepal are teahouse lodges which are often called standard lodges. There are also a small number of high quality lodges which are called luxury lodges. Luxury treks in Nepal are only available in the Everest and Annapurna regions.
“Luxury” is a relative term and of course, the description of lodges varies from person to person. Lodges offer a higher level of service compared to teahouse lodges. With a luxury trekking holiday in Nepal, you will enjoy the natural beauty of the Himalayas. They provide a consistent level of service. The staff are friendly and welcoming. They take good care of you during your stay in these comfortable lodges.
We have inspected the lodges we use in Nepal for many years and have stayed in most of them. We will provide pre-trip advice on packages based on our first-hand knowledge of luxury holidays in Nepal.
Facilities At The High-quality Trek Lodges in Nepal
In Nepal’s luxury lodges, you get homely comforts like bedrooms with attached bathrooms. With hot water facilities in the bathrooms. A proper shower after a day of trekking is definitely a treat! There are communal rooms with dining and living areas. These areas are heated during the day and evening. They are comfortable places to relax and enjoy your free time. The lodges have attractive gardens and luxurious lodges in prime locations with mountain views! These lodges offer additional amenities and services compared to the teahouse lodges in Nepal. We have summarized them below:
- The bedrooms have attached bathrooms with hot water (both solar and gas). They also have western style toilets.
- The bedrooms are well designed and have proper bedding with mattresses and clean sheets. You don’t need to bring your sleeping bag with you
- There are heaters in the rooms. Also, Everest Summit Lodges use electric blankets to keep the bed warm.
- They have hot restaurants with table service by trained staff in hotel management.
- Safe drinking water is available. You can refill your water bottle for the next day’s hike.
- There are electrical power sockets in the communal areas and bedrooms. In the teahouse lodges you pay extra to recharge the battery.
- Hair dryers are also available for guests on request from the reception.
- There are laundry facilities but this is dependent on the weather. If it is cloudy it will not be possible to wash your kit as it will not dry in time.
Food Dishes At Luxury Lodges in Nepal
In luxury lodges in Nepal, high quality food is served for meals. Compared to tea house lodges, the kitchens are staffed by trained chefs, so there is a lot more variety in the food. Dishes range from Nepali, Indian, Tibetan, Chinese to continental. These lodges have refrigerators, so it is safe to eat meat. One of the benefits of staying at a luxury lodge is that you will receive a cup of tea and biscuits or cake on arrival in the afternoon. Therefore; lodges will accommodate food preferences and allergies. We will inform the lodges in advance about any dietary requirements for our groups.
Locations of Luxury Treks in Nepal
The country has high-end lodges in the Everest and Annapurna regions of Nepal. On Everest, there are two chains called Everest Summit Lodge and Yeti Mountain Home. Both of these lodges are of a similar high standard. We use both of these chains for our Luxury Ama Dablam Base Camp and Luxury Everest Base Camp treks. The lodges are mostly located away from other tea house lodges in a quiet environment. Everest Summit Lodge in Tashinga is a secluded spot on a plateau above the Everest Base Camp trail. From this lodge, the Himalayan views to Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Mount Everest are superb. While some lodges are in villages where it would be interesting to see monasteries and traditional Sherpa houses.
In Annapurna, Ker & Downey operate the only high-end lodges in this trekking region. Founded by a former British Gurkha officer, these lodges run like well-oiled military machines! As expected, the service is of a high standard. You will find that Annapurna lodges are built using local materials such as stone and wood. Kerr and Downy luxury have built many others using traditional construction methods. For example; Sanctuary Lodge in Birethanti and Gurung Lodge in Mazgaon have been built.
Kerr and Downy lodges have comfortable communal areas centered around a fire pit and bar. Guests sit around the fire to warm up while sipping drinks during happy hour before dining. So take a look at our Annapurna luxury lodge trek.
